Spotting At Madrid Barajas (MAD) Terminal

Tue Mar 29, 2011 8:40 pm

In the near future I will be travelling from Europe to Florianopolis (Brazil). I will change flights in Madrid Barajas (MAD). I will have to spend some time in the airport, so I was wondering:

1. Is it possible to do some spotting from the terminal at Madrid Barajas (MAD)?
2. Is this allowed?

All answers will be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,

There used to be an area by McDonald's at MAD T1 with large glass windows, and with discretion decent enough photos could be had. Think the area still exists, although whether the McDonald's is still there I don't know.

A better option - time permitting - is to take the metro one stop down to Barajas, from where a short walk (about 5mins) will get you access to the famous 'Barajas mound'. Much of the traffic passes on its way from/to the northern runways, but you will miss IB's heavies and some of the SouAm and African/MidEast stuff. You are very close though, only requiring something like a 24-105.

Well, the spot 2 looks nice.

However, having taking a closer look at my schedule, I think it will be difficult (I am the kind of guy that takes huge margins on any kind of time schedule - rather 30 minutes early than 1 minute too late). First stop-over in Madrid will be in the evening and during the night (be there between 2120 and 0040). Normally not the best moments for spotting. Although, with subjects standing still and some lighting (now I am wishing my Canon 17-85 were a bit faster) ... who knows what I might try.

On the return I will be there between 0645 and 0900. That seems to be a bit short. Coming from the South Americas I should take my time to pass customs entering the EU again. I guess I just have to keep my eyes open and take the opportunities when I see them...

Quoting ToVeR (Reply 2):

It is indeed, particularly if you happen to need to change to a different terminal.

Have a great day,

Actually my main goal would be to try and take a picture of the aircraft bringing me to Brazil. Not visiting Spain (and Madrid) as a spotter limits my options to see and picture the metalllic bird that will be taking me over there.
