Possible Camera Problem

Tue Apr 05, 2011 11:19 am

Just had a rejection for a shot - the shot in question is here:
http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...00988470.6974110323-g-civc-lhr.jpg

Screener comments note: lines in sky below tail

The lines are something I can't see in the original picture but was something I noticed when equalising the shot to check for dust spots. Thing is that these lines show on all pictures (well ones with a single colour / non detailled background, not noticeable on detailled shots) straight out of the camera, before any processing. A couple of examples that show the lines clearer (just equalise / resize):

The rejected shot:

Another from the same day:

The camera is a brand new Canon 7D, this was actually just the 2nd time using it. Any thoughts on what this could be, or is this a faulty sensor that needs to go back?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Does not look good...first have a look at the lens? Could be dirty? If no the lens then I would send it back to get it looked at.

As those line are pretty much identical in both pictures it could be something with the sensor.

Have you checked the pictures from the first time when you tried it? Have you changed the lense to see if there is something with the lense?

I'd suggest, take it back to the store and let them check it.

Sad that the shot got rejected, nice one of the BA 744...

Put it on AV mode at go to the smallest aperture possible (f/22 or f/32, whatever your lens will let you do) and take an out of focus picture of a plain white wall. This will show up any marks on sensor/lens etc. Then post a link to the pic!

These were taken with the 100-400mm, the shot below with the 24-105mm both bought at the same time as the camera (insurance replacements), so appears not to be the lens.
Couldn't find a white wall but did manage to find something on the ground white, the equalised version:

Must have blocked the sun out the right side but still the lines are clearly visible. As said above this was a different lens to the aircraft shots. Looks like it may have to go back!

Yes. And looks like a huge dustspot is on the sensor as well already...

Yep, that'll be 3 days shooting at Alicante with dust everywhere, save a job of cleaning it when it goes back anyway!

Good way to see it the positive way. But still annoying a brandnew camera with such a flew. It's a shame. Keep my fingers crossed that you get a proper one now.

It almost looks like a smear, as though the sensor has been (badly) cleaned. It could be anything really, but you did the right thing in sending it back.

I doubt it was ever going to be a lens fault, looking at the way the marks/lines appeared.

Cheers all,

Took it back this afternoon actually and managed top show them the lines on a shot taken instore. They agreed to swap it (only 3 weeks old) but hadn't got any stock! Short drive tomorrow to a local branch and should be able to get it sorted though.

My first thought was that it was an early version that suffered from ghosting. But I can't imagine anyone of those are still in shops. And that was fixed with a firmware later on (like mine). But the position of the lines is consistent so my guess is that the screen in front of the sensor is faulty. Hope you get a replacement fast!
