NAS Whidbey Island/Oak Harbor Airport Spotting

Fri Apr 22, 2011 12:09 am

Hi all,

Due to the recently predicted nice weather in the Puget Sound Area I thought this weekend would be a nice weekend to Burn some film at NAS Whidbey Island/Oak Harbor Airport. My questions are 1) Is it allowed? 2) If so where do I get good shots like http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA--...y/Grumman-EA-6B-Prowler/1879318/M/ ?

Regards and Thanks in Advance

Pretty sure that was taken as part of a photo call, so you'll need an invitation on to the base and airside access to get that close.

Not sure what you are trying to ask.. are you asking if you can go airside to take pictures like the one you linked, or are you asking if you can just hang around outside the perimeter and hope to catch a glimpse of some action at a distance?

I wouldn't count on it. Operational bases in the US are sensitive places. I'd recommend contacting the base Public Information Officer.

Be prepared to make the acquaintance of some military police. Hanging around outside military installations in the United States with a camera is generally frowned upon by the authorities. Remember, the US military is currently involved in 2.5 wars.

The one exception is the one day a year an air base hosts an airshow. On that day, you are supposed to hang around with a camera.

This is true however some bases like Nellis and El Centro are pretty friendly to photographers
