Lense Help Please

Fri Apr 29, 2011 8:30 am

This is my first posting ever I think in this thread.

At the moment I have a Cannon 20D, with a 18-55 lense. its good for some shots, but aircraft its crap at taking unless im standing right next to something.

I need your help with the following:

Jessops are doing a Tamron lens, 70-300mm for £119 (A good package for £145 including a lens bag)

Is it worth it for me. It seems an ideal price, it gets me zoom which I really do want.

Im trying to link it here but its going weird, so head over to the Jessops site and look at the lense

Is it worth it for me to get used to zooming and get better shots?

Thank you your your advice

The 20D with that lens is good enough for the job when used within its limitations. As you say, it's a relatively wide zoom lens so you need to be pretty close to something in order to fill the frame for aviation applications. You need to decide on the focal lengths you need for the airports you visit and start from their really. There are plenty of good lenses out there to suit most budgets, but you need to consider your needs first, eg is a 70-200 not long enough? a 100-400 too long at the short end? or is a 70-300 about right? Then you need to factor in your budget as lenses are anything from £100 - several thousand!

For an airport, I live right next to LHR so that would be my main airport.

70-300 is excellent for shooting aircraft. Buy it. Together with your fine body (i mean 20D  ) you'll be able to produce competent photos.
