Dublin And Belfast Airport Spotting

Fri May 20, 2011 7:52 pm

This is my first forum-so please be nice and cool. This forum is all about plane spotting at airports in DUB and Belfast! (both airports, BFS and the BHD)

I have a canon EOS 300D with a 100-300mm lens

1. What are the best places around DUB airport and Belfast to photograph aircraft?
2. Whats the best settings to get the best quality shots?
3. Also when is the best time of day for good shots for a wide variety of aircraft and foreign airlines?
4. And lastly does anyone know when the U.S. President is coming to Ireland because i'm desperate to spot AF1?- that's if he is flying to Dublin!

Well I can help out with BHD. The main place to photograph from is the top deck of Ikea car park. From here you have a view over of aircraft arriving on RWY 22 as well as aircraft lifting off from RWY 04. The light is good here from sunrise until about 3pm. Ikea actually close off the top deck of the Car Park during weekdays so if you want to go up, just head up the stairs, hopping over the chain if necessary. Ikea staff are happy enough for you to go up here as long as you do not leave litter.

Alternatively, you can cross the road to the bus turning circle and stand beside the low fence there. You get a more side on view and are a tad closer to the aircraft than the top deck of the car park.

Spotting at BFS is actually pretty rotten, not many suitable areas there due to the Army base on the Southside of the airport. Spotting at Killead Church (just outside the gate on the road) is probably the only place you can photograph from. I've no photographs from there myself as traffic there is so little, it's not worth travelling the 18 miles from Belfast to get there.

I hope this helps. Also here is the link to a Northern Irish aviation website which can help you out with any information you need regarding spotting at the two Belfast airports and Dublin as well;

Can you say 'Beer Can' without sounding like a Jamaican saying 'Bacon'?

Search Anet for previous posts regarding locations in Dublin. The closest spot is a good, but managable, walk from the terminal, usually called the mound, on the road near the main runway. There is no public transport all the way to this spot.

Unfortunately all likely spots are unlikely to be available during the Presidential visit, as the airport perimiter roads are usually restricted or closed for these visits. In any event, likely weather for tomorrow is showing foul.
