Hellinikon Intl. Airport - Athens

Fri Jun 03, 2011 5:32 pm

Hello,

I have recently being doing some research on abandoned airfields. As I am currently in Athens right now I decided to take a look at the disused airfield the other day. There are a few disused aircraft there such as the Boeing 742 and the Boeing 737. The terminal that's nearest to the aircraft had nothing in it. Anyway cut to the point, Is there any way of getting into the actual airport and getting some shots? I have tried to get down to the apron from the car park, but I'm not going to risk breaking my neck or spine from jumping about 15ft down onto pure concrete.

Also, another question regarding the airport. Why are the aircraft still there, why is the terminal still there, and why is the radar on the airfield rotating. Surely the GCAA/HCAA would of demolished the airfield?

When I drove past the radar and the Olympic Terminal there were people still going in and out of the area. There were also security men as I tried to enter the airfield. Surely something is still going on there.

I hope somebody can answer my questions and relieve my anxiety about this topic.

Thanks in advance!

Josh

Hi Josh,

I wouldn't advise you go snooping around like that as you could end up in deep water. I would find a site office or a reception or security person and ask permission first. If there's no way to get a good view of the aircraft from a public area, tresspassing around an airport is not a good idea.

Hi Darren,

Thanks for the advice. But the airport has been inactive for the last 9 years. I will send off some emails, and see what I can retrieve.

Thanks again,

Josh

Looks like a BAC-111 as well. Perhaps contact these photographers and ask them where they shot from, and if private, what means did they go about in getting access.

From info I've gathered, they're sitting there awaiting the building of a museum to be stored in. When that will happen, noone knows.

According to wiki, the runways and other buildings were converted to use as a sports facility for the olympics in 2004. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helliniko_Olympic_Complex
