JFK Spotters....any Playgrounds Nearby?

Sat Jun 04, 2011 2:38 pm

Hello All,

Visiting my in-laws who live near JFK (about 15 miles away). Are there any public playgrounds/parks where my kids can play and watch planes. I've started their spotting skills early; my almost-3-year-old knows the difference between a 4-holer and a 2-holer based on contrail patterns....

Thanks in advance.

Hello Cha747,

There is a playground that comes in mind just north of the airport. Its on Lefferts Blvd and is just before the highway going towards the airport. Im not sure of the name. But thats all that I could think of.

Thanks N623JB - It so turned-out that about an hour after I made that appeal, they started routing JFK arrivals over my in-laws house in Long Island. Between 11:30a-12:30pm we saw from the backyard:

Air France 747
Korean Air 747
British Airways 747
Lufthansa A380

And various varieties of AA, DL, and B6 metal.

But I'll check the playground out and keep it in mind.

Anybody else know any good places like in Ozone Park, Jamaica, or the Rockaways?

That's impressive! Most of the people I know can tell a "jumbo jet", an "airbus" (meaning exclusively the A380,) and then the rest are "planes". And that's even close up.

If they are landing 22L/R, you could check out North Woodmere Park. It's backlit for photos in the afternoon, but if all you care about is hanging out and watching, it should do well.

Here's an idea of the views:

The playground I was referring to is located in South Ozone Park.
