Canon EF 70-300mm F/4-5,6L Is USM - Happy With It?

Wed Jun 08, 2011 8:55 pm

Hi!

I got this lens (Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5,6L IS USM) some weeks ago, but I´m not really sure if it was a good idea to use it instead of a 100-400 and 70-200 4L IS USM. I´m missing the little rest of crisp/sharpness at around 220-250mm focal lengths...

Does anybody use this new lens and can say something about it in comparison to 100-400 and 70-200?

Thanks
Jens

I just rented this lens from BorrowLenses.com and am taking it to GVA tomorrow for a test run. I will let you know what I think in a couple of days.

I have been using mine since February, and so far I never touched my 70-200/4 IS anymore

It's very sharp, and I see no problem above 200mm - although at 300mm it's slightly less sharp than the shorter settings.

this was taken around 180mm;

I got it for $1250 and it's definitely a great buy!

My experience is that it is better than the 100-400. My father compared his 100-400 with my 70-300, and at 300mm my lens is a tad sharper, but that doesn't make much difference. The IS however is much, much better (twice as effective), and the lens is cheaper. When it comes to spotting, I had no problem with it as airliners are nowadays pretty large, and a good spot at an airshow will let you get good shots of small warbirds, most of the time. I did wish I had something between 300 and 400 at my last air show though...(I have the 70-300L and 400 5.6L).

My father also owns the 70-200 f4. It is excellent, but weighs the same as the 70-300 and is shorter, with a similar IS. He hasn't used it since he get his 100-400.

Hope it helps

I also have a 70-200/4 IS, and mine is actually longer than 70-300L (at shortest position) and lighter as well. The drawback of 70-300L is its weight IMO.

Only time I regret getting the 70-300mm L is low light when the 70-200mm F2.8 would clearly be better...

Indeed, my memory failed me   The 70-300L is still very light compared to the 100-400 and Sigma 120-400.

I've had this lens for a couple of years and find that from 200-300 if you can go f10 or f13 you get pretty sharp images.

Are you talking about the 70-300 IS USM? The L was introduced late 2010.

Whoops, I am talking about the IS USM. Didn't notice the "L" in the title.

yah I have both and in no way is the non-L comparable in performance. The plain 70-300mm IS is a good $500-600 lens, just not L quality. Just the focusing and IS of the L lens sets it a world apart, and the awesome sharpness from 70 to 300mm is as good as you can find in any L zoom.
