Top Five Dominance. A Few Questions. (Part 2)

Thu Jun 09, 2011 3:07 am

This is a continuation on the original "Top Five Dominance. A Few Questions." thread. I thought it was decided that non-newsworthy photos that weren't already in the Top 5 wouldn't be promoted in their first 24 hours - however I noticed some seemingly random/non-newsworthy shots being promoted shortly after they were accepted. Am I missing something or did this guideline revert?

Quoting planespot (Thread starter):

Hello Planespot - No nothing has changed. There may be one or two shots that are posted which might make the Top 5 but is it very rare, this is due to not all crew having access to the screening log to determine when the shot was accepted.

We have posted some shots shortly after uploading with a comment in relation to news and they are well received. While you may not consider them to be newsworthy many of our followers do even if they are from a specific demographic. Additionally, there are many photos accepted by the priority team that do not qualify for a banner and we post some of those to show our appreciation to the photographer for bringing it to our site first.

Regards

Paul

Thanks Paul. The examples I noticed weren't "firsts" or newsworthy (especially considering one of them was shot more than 6 months ago and just added) and they were promoted within their first 1-3 hours, when they only had a handful of views. They both made the Top 5. If you'd like me to contact you privately with the specific photos, I'd be happy to do that. Maybe I missed something that you can point out.

Quoting planespot (Reply 2):

Hello Planespot,

The purpose of the original discussion you linked was to level the playing field for all photos to have an equal opportunity to make the Top 5 on their own merit with no influence from the social media sites. We've delivered on that and consistently review our postings to ensure it stays that way even though it has had a negative impact on the growth of those sites.

Back then it was not uncommon for the Top 5 to consist of several shots that hit those sites within hours of being accepted and that no longer happens. That the majority of our postings now clearly state where the shot is sourced from was in direct response to that discussion.

I've receive constant communication from many photographers who have questions about the social media sites and the ensuing discussions are great as we've all benefited from them. As noted in my first post a few might get through and I don't see the need to question a couple of shots out of the thousands posted but I am willing to assist if you'd like to send me the photos you have.

Regards

Paul

Hi Paul...I will message you privately, because I don't think we're on the same page here.
