NY Area (KHPN)

Fri Jun 17, 2011 8:52 pm

Hi everyone, I just moved from Europe to NY, more exactly Westchester County. I was wondering if anyone knew about KHPN (Westchester Airport) and if it had some decent traffic ? JFK, LGA and EWR are a bit too far for the time being.

I also found the American Air Power Museum online and read they had some warbirds flying sometimes, but their website doesn't seem to be up to date. Is anyone familiar with it (I know, it is pretty far as well   ) ? Of course I got my warbird fix at the Reading Airshow two weeks ago. That B29 is a beauty !

thanks

I'm a volunteer photographer at the American Airpower Museum. The web site is improving (I know, I know) but if you are on Facebook, they keep their page there pretty up to date. You just missed a huge weekend at the museum - we host most of the aircraft that participate in the Memorial Day weekend show at Jones Beach (Yes, Fifi was here). Over the summer, we send some of our war birds off to other shows, but for Labor Day weekend at the beginning of September we usually have a big event - last year we had the Canadian Lancaster, as well as a Spitfire on hand to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Other times during the summer, it's a question of weather and pilot availability as to whether you will see anything fly, but there is also plenty to see in the museum itself (the museum is housed in a hangar where P-47s were built during WWII). If you have any questions about the museum, or are planning to visit, drop me a line!

HPN sees a ton of corporate aviation, not much airline traffic. JFK and LGA are your best bets for spotting heavy iron in the area. Local law enforcement around EWR strongly discourages aviation photography. Again, I'd be glad to answer any specific questions you might have.

hi, thank you for your message. I was actually thinking of becoming a member of the American Airpower Museum, but I don't know yet if I'll have so much free time. I was aware of Memorial Day and the show, I couldn't make it here in time but I still got to see Fifi at Reading. I'll check on facebook to know when to go

Spotting isn't against the law, right ? so what can police officers do around Newark ? it is closer to where I am now, I wanted to go there first (my last trip to JFK took 3 hours one way...)

They could tell you "you're not taking pictures of airplanes in my town" and yell at you to leave, which is exactly what happened to me the last time I was spotting from a public area there. And if you don't do what they say, they can find a way to ruin your day. Funny how it's called Newark Liberty International Airport.

It's not illegal, especially in public places, but as Cary said, the police are very aggressive when it comes to moving spotters along.

It would have been easier when I was just a tourist here. I'll probably try JFK instead, but I don't know anything there. At least I knew Ikea next to Newark ^^

I'll be glad to answer any questions about JFK, I spot there regularly, and Cary gets out there now and then as well. And you would last about 30 seconds in the IKEA parking lot before security or local police chase you away!  Wow!

Thanks   I found a website, NYCaviation, with maps explaining where to go, if people had problems with law enforcement, ... but I don't know the area at all. The main problem would be to know which runway is active.

Is there any better time to spot larger planes ? In Paris most of the heavy traffic lands early in the morning.

But first I have to pass my local driver's license ...

JFK gets a wave of European/ME traffic in the late afternoon, so you will see a bunch of heavies then. As to active runway, that gets moved around, not always in a logical manner (wind-wise) but you can call to listen to the current ATIS information recording: 718-995-8188

That could be handy, thanks. Hopefully I can find a day soon where I can get there without traffic...

HPN used to be "Gulfstream Town USA" but no longer. While it does have its fair share of corporate activity spotting is discouraged there and offers few really good vantage points. I had a shoot of a F-900 last week there and the pilot told me he saw " bunch of guys" with cameras so he notified local police. This surprised me coming from a crew member...they are usually very tolerant if not amitious of photographers. The most diversity around will be JFK, however check with NYC aviation...They post great info about the airport. Summer @ JFK will promise most activity using the 2's and the 13 runways. End of August through September...great lighting...trust Moose135 on his facts about local shooting. Great source...g...PS, coming from Europe you will find generally speaking, most airports in the US are not happy to see cameras while their use is not illegal...g
