Help With Post Processing Using Aperture And NIK

Sat Jul 02, 2011 9:48 pm

Hello all and greetings from Colorado. I am seeking some guidance from any of you that happen to use Aperture and NIK software for your post production work.

To date, I have had EVERY photo submitted rejected, mostly for sharpness. I don't know what I am doing wrong and am in dire need of help.

My equipment and process:

Nikon D700
Nikkor 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 VR2
Apple MacBook Pro
Aperture 3.0
NIK Sharpener Pro 3.0
NIK Define

I shoot in RAW (12MB files) at around F/9 and as expected the shots are a bit soft due to shooting in RAW. I then make any exposure/contrast/shadow adjustments within Aperture and then edit with Define and then Sharpener PRO.

What am I doing wrong?

Hard to tell without seeing samples or more detail about your workflow, there are some excellent workflow guides a vail on this site.

If I would guess at your issues, if you are accustomed to processing for prints there is a pretty high likelihood that your images are oversharpened.

Post a couple of examples in the Photo Feedback forum, you will soon get an idea where you can improve.

Cheers

Chris
If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

+1

Also, is your screen calibrated? The MBP standard calibration is whacked out when you're trying to work in sRGB. This could disguise some soft issues

I have not submitted this for review yet but would like your thoughts. I pre-sharpened this with Aperture 3's RAW sharpener and then hit it with NIK's output sharpener.

I sharpened this with RAW pre-sharpener in Aperture 3 then hit it with NIK's output sharpener. What are your thoughts guys? Haven't submitted this for review at A.Net yet.
