New Camera, Lens Advice Please?!

Tue Jul 12, 2011 9:11 pm

Hi all,

About to upgrade to a Canon 550D, and would be eternally greatful if I could have a little help choosing a new lens. I still have an Canon EF 75-300mm f4/5.6 USM MK3 which I bought along with my 300D about 5 years ago, but I'm not sure if it will get the best out of my new equipment that I'm after.

I have looked at the Sigma 50-500mm lens, and the 150-500mm lens, with the first being the more expensive for the extra 100mm. But do I really even need a new lens? Already spending £550 on the body, not sure if I have an extra £1000 for the lens too!

Many thanks.

The first question I would ask myself is 'what focal lengths do I need / use?' Then I would look at a budget and take it from there. There are plenty of lenses out there so you need to narrow down your requirements and how much you want to spend. The 75-300 you have is a decent enough basic zoom lens, but you'll probably find it's soft over 200mm which is where better performing lenses come in, at a price. It all depends what you want to acheive, what you need to acheive it and how much you are prepared to pay.

Equipment: 2x Canon EOS 50D; Sigma 10-20 EX DC HSM, 50-500 EX APO DG, Canon 24-105 f/4 L, Speedlite 430EX

Only you can answer that. Are you happy with the performance of your 75-300? If yes, then it will probably serve you well with your 550D. Changing the lens rather than the body would have actually brought you the quality you are perhaps after. I'd much rather have a 300D with a nice L lens than a 550D with a cheap 75-300.
