The Beauty Of The Last Light Of The Day.

Thu Jul 14, 2011 4:33 pm

I know a lot of us aren't too keen on taking photos during the high sun times of the summer. Waking up early to grab the first light of the day or waiting for the sun to go down are good times. Add to either of those the passing of a thunder storm can give some glorious skies.
This happened here a few weeks ago, so I grabbed my camera, but sadly not the bigger lens.
Managed to capture this, sadly not good enough for here, but I like the atmosphere of the sky.

So what dusk/dawn shots do you have that please you, but wouldn't make it here ?

Yeah... my favourite light.

If you shoot at dusk/dawn light, with the light coming from your back, you could get some good reflections.
But those are good times to take backlit shots too.

I treid several times to upload something here, but only one passed. other ones were rejected for different reasons.

I have got a kind of "special" picture: I took it one evening, from my balcony... I just looked out and saw how spectacular was the sky in that moment.
But let the image speak for me:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/6036974...856969040/in/photostream/lightbox/

I think that this one will never make it here... just because it's too distant.
But if I had the chance to zoom more, the whole effect would have probably been lost...
So, I prefer it in this way!

I love sunrises and sunsets... I really wish I had a camera capable of taking a decent airplane shot at these times of day!

I suppose you live near a big airport... big enough to be suitable for 744s...
So... which is the airport?

Mine one is Linate, in Italy (LIML)... practically I see aircraft at about 3-4 miles on final...

First and last light is always good. This one I liked:

That was very early in the morning, but I had to get up even earlier to get out there in time - as I live far away from the airport.

Otherwise, I like making use of every little bit of "last light", where ever it comes from, the sky, or the plane, or background light for that matter:

That was F/4.5 at 1/15sec. I used manual settings to avoid the camera getting confused by the port lights in the background. Unfortunately, I don't really have enough focal length to adequately get those shots absolutely full frame. It's the reverse of my other famous Emirates B777 takeoff shot. There is another angle I'll try for that one that will get a very different look.

I don't really care if they wouldn't make it here - even though they might if I spent some time editing them. I just put them straight on my site with the minimum of editing needed.

Nice shot Darren!

One more from me, that I didn't expect would work:

The shutter speed was so slow, it was like click....(wait) .... click. I expected to get nothing more than huge motion blur on everything. So the result was quite pleasing. Fortunately, Air New Zealand sends three A320s and they seem to arrive within minutes of each other some days - so it's always possible to photograph at least one of them.

It was very dark when I took that photo, with only a small bit of light remaining - if you could even call it that. The 1/3sec shutter speed makes it appear much brighter than it was.

Hello Chris.

I always love seeing your panning shots. That Air New Zealand is a real stunner - surely the screeners would accept that one here, as the overall quality and sharpness of the main subject is apparent for all to see? One third of a second is somewhat astonishing for an amateur like me! I would love to have just one shot like that one day.

All the best.

These are not nearly as spectacular as some of the shots you guys posted here, but I still liked the evening light at the last MAN meet:

I agree about the sunset light. It softens and warms the white on many airframes. The only thing I've had trouble with is keeping keeping the sun glare down on the polished planes like the ones at Airshows.

Definitely my favourite times of the day to shoot in! Here's a B747 I got at AMS recently, as the Sun was coming up.
Singapore Cargo B74F AMS

Was thinking about adding it but would probably get a distance rejection?
Cheers

Love it Spence!!!!!
To me its all about that the aircraft only flies because of interaction in the most amazing environments that are picture worthy in their own right!
Great to be able to get amazing skies and beautiful aircraft images photography at it's best...composition becomes the single most important factor and really shows guys with the eye..not a pixel counting ruler.

Most probably yes, Spence but a closer crop might work.

I love the images with big sky small aircraft showing the amazing skies to the best!

I call those small aircraft shots japanese style shots, as in this amazing Kazutaka Yagi's shot:
