Cologne Official Viewing Area

Tue Oct 04, 2011 11:22 am

Hi there,

I would like to go to Cologne for a weekend next month. With the official viewing area, is it any good for photography? Is there any glass to shoot through etc?

I'm looking at staying at the Holiday Inn, is this the best option or are there any cheaper/closer hotels?]

Also, looking at pictures from Cologne, Silk Way IL-76's seem pretty regular. Do they have set days they come in or is it random short notice charters?

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

Not sure about Il-76s and what days they are, but the deck at CGN is very good - if you have a small set of steps. The glass is filthy, and reaches about 6ft in height, so it's not great for shooting through.

If, however, you do have steps, and runway 14 is in use, you will have a great time (providing the sun shines). Most pax aircraft taxi past on their way from/to the runway, and for any cargo you can shoot them in the flare.

There was a short period this year where the Il-76 flights (german military supply flights to Afghanistan) were relocated from Trollenhagen to CGN but those flights are now back at Trollenhagen.

On sundays you have a lot of cargo flights (UPS, Fedex, etc) during day time.

Sun for 14L arrivals is good from late morning till sunset.

Otherwise Karl has summed it up nicely.

Forgot to add that I stayed at the Ibis, which is one stop away on the train. They run very early 'til very late and it's no hassle whatsoever. Think the Holiday Inn might be on the same complex? Ibis I imagine will be cheaper.

Another option is to stand on top of the parking deck at P3. You'll be at roughly the same height as the planes landing on 14L, and also have a good view over part of the terminal 2 apron, but the rest is pretty much out of view. You'll need a big lense though, 300+ mm.

If the glass is too bad on the viewing deck, you can also stand in the hallway connecting terminal 1 and 2. Also with glass, but in my experience it's usually kept cleaner then the glass on the viewing deck.

So if they aren't on Runway 14, is it good for departure shots?

Thanks again

If they are using 32 most aircraft will be too high for good photos. The odd heavy might go long enough but don't forget that CGN has a very long main runway!
