Is there A Market For Aviation Art?

Tue Oct 04, 2011 2:35 pm

Hallo

There are so many great photos on the website. I want to know if there is a market for really good aviation art, be it pencil sketches or paintings. What price are people willing to pay?

Thank you

Hi there,

there surely is a market; it might not be huge but out of experience I know that people are willing to pay a bit more for good quality stuff.
I found a drawing from this guy at last year's Flying Legends airshow:

His work ain't cheap but it's of very high quality.

There's also a lot of mediocre stuff around which you can get for a couple bucks but here again you get what you pay for.

A guy used to go to Oshkosh every year before he died. Called himself the Flying Dutchman. Built amazing wire sculptures of aircraft and dirigibles. Very accurate and detailed. Most of the dirigibles were about 6' long, lighted and highly animated. He built a very detailed cutaway WWII submarine. It wasn't for sale until a WWII vet who served on that boat handed him a check for $70,000. Every year I went to Oshkosh his booth was the first place I went. He added a lot to aviation and his stuff didn't even fly. I miss him.

Aviation art is very popular in the UK in many formats. Personally I am a fan of pencil work, with plenty of crisp detail. I also like emotive pieces. Pity I can't afford some of the very best of them, but there are aviation artists for all tastes and budgets.

Best regards,

Jim
Erm, is this thing on?

I think there is a market, but I don't know what the demand is. But, for example, when I got my apartment, I re-decorated before moving in. The color scheme was terrible so I needed to change that, and then I wanted to go with "vintage" airline advertisements for most of the wall hangings. Now, all of my wall hangings in the hall, bathroom and living room are all "vintage" airline ads. The prints were bought from allposters.com.

Pix of my apartment from FB can be found here:
