Best Nikon Lens

Sat Oct 08, 2011 1:24 pm

I have just bought a nikon D3100 with an 18-55mm lens and I was just wondering what the best lens is for aviation photography under $500.

I use and will recommend this:

It's very sharp throughout the focal range, affordable and can work on an FX body. Some examples:

How long will it take you to earn an additional $30?

From the note on the site, that lens will not autofocus on your camera. It's designed for older bodies.

If you really want to get the most out of your camera, you will have to invest in a decent lens. And by decent I don't mean the most expensive. However when they are too cheap always look closer and read the 'fine print'. Also research the online reviews. They are invaluable and can really guide you to a better decision. Remember, there is always a reason they are cheap. Something is being given up somewhere. IMO, it's better to wait and save till you can afford a better one unless you find a great deal.

Another thing to keep in mind: The d3100 has no built-in focus motor so every lens you buy must have a built-in motor if you want to auto focus. That alone makes the available selection of lenses less and more expensive. Unfortunately that's one of the downsides of buying an entry level body. So if the lens is very cheap always check that it has a built-in motor and that it will work with your body.

That lens is included with some kits and is a good enough beginner lens. It will work just fine on your body. It's not going to perform as well as those above but it should get you decent pics, good enough to be accepted here. Also, the range should be enough till you figure out what you really want / need.

Any AF-I/AF-S lenses will focus with the D3100.

The 55-200VR is "usably sharp" [YMMV] near/at 200mm from experience. However, vignetting could prove an issue, especially at larger apertures.

I have no direct experience with that lens, just what I've read in the reviews. Like Eugene said though, it might vary a little from body to body. My guess would be that it would begin to soften up at or a little before 200mm. You'll have to try it to know for sure.

To answer your last question, yes it will auto focus on your camera.
