Nikon D3 Or D3s

Thu Oct 20, 2011 1:24 am

I am possibly in the market for either a used Nikon D3 or a new D3s. Now it wouldn't be used exclusively for avaition but I am interested to know what you think between the two in terms of IQ. Obviously the D3s will be better but the price difference over here is at least £1500. Also I don't really need the video as I have two pro spec video cameras already.

Hi Andy, I shoot Canon, and I never bothered to look into the D3 in the past. However, I have seen the high ISO shots of Chris Denton and Elia Lechner, and they are great. I also recently had the opportunity to help a fellow A.netter edit an ISO 6400 shot. It came out looking like my ISO 1250 shot on my 7D, really good.

If you're into low light photography, get the D3S! I'm really impressed.

I have the D3, D3s and D3x. The D3s beats both the D3 and D3x hands down in the low light category. If you shoot low light, then the D3s is worth every penny/pence/farthing/fortnight.

I use the D3s for a lot of low light stuff besides aviation. On vacation I don't even bring a flash because I don't need it.

Two examples: on the left at 3200 and the right at 6400 (the one on the right is the one Ron referred to above - I actually forgot to shoot in RAW so that is from a jpg with a bit of neat image).

I do like some low light photography. I really love aviation shots at night, they just look so dramatic.

Pete those two shots are amazing. The Canadian North at 6400 is just stunning. These types of shots would have been unthinkable when I started ten years ago!

[edit] - Forgot to add - Have any of you had any issues with the (comparatively) lower resolution of the D3s? I briefly owned a Canon 1DmkIV at 16mp and the D3s is a fair bit lower. I'm not planning to print anything billboard size though so it's probably no big deal.
