Spottiong At Changi Airport

Fri Oct 28, 2011 12:56 am

Hello, i will be in Singapore starting at the beginning of November. It be very appreciated if I can get any help, especially of some local spotters ..

1.) Where and when to go? Where is the best location and the most traffic I can get within about 4 or 5 hours?
2.) How about the weather at Singapore now?
3.) What about permission? Do I need some special document as in CDG or how does it work with the Singaporean authorities/ police? or just interested into your hobby (as in most parts of Europe)?
4.) and does anyone want to meet up in Singapore to spot together and maybe show me some good locations in the city, etc?

thanks in advance

Hi, Huy, to answer your questions:

1) Spotting locations are fairly limited in Singapore, but it depends on what type of shots you are looking for e.g. ground-sky shots or ground-ground shots.

-For ground-sky shots, there are 2 primary locations, Changi Beach (for RWY20R for morning and afternoon shots) and Changi Business Park (for RWY02L for afternoon shots) operations (It can be difficult to shoot traffic on RWY02/20C). Both are easily accessible by public transport.

-For ground-ground shots, the only free publicly accessible area would be the Viewing Mall at Terminal 1, which offers views of aircraft parking at the Terminal 1 Central Apron as well as aircraft taxiing across North Cross. An example of shots you'll be able to get are as follows:

Do note that it can get pretty quiet at times at the Viewing Mall.

-In general, it is not recommended that you shoot beyond the aforementioned places, especially at the perimeter fences as the police do get cagey about it and you might be asked to leave.

2) You will only encounter 2 types of weather in Singapore - sunny or rainy, and the weather can be really erratic, so do always bring an umbrella with you.

3) You do not need any permits, however, always carry your passport with you at all times in case the police stop you.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Just adding on to the previous reply by 9VSWR, It's now the Rwy02 season (generally), which means spotting at the Changi Business Park. Unless you drive there/hire a cab, it's harder to reach this place than the Beach (which will mean departures- but you are not guaranteed to spot most departures. It's the place where you can find most of the arrivals in 4-5 hours. The weather, frankly, isn't the best nowadays, with frequent showers/heavy rain. There should be no problem spotting at CBP/Changi beach. There are many spotters(not sure if they post on this forum), but I for one can't help (meet)you as i have a dental MC during that period.

Hi again, Huy.

I'll be schooling in November so it's unlikely that I will be able to go spotting. However, as yapple mentioned, there should be at least a few spotters spotting at any given time at the aforementioned locations so you might run into them should you go spotting.

Perhaps you could try posting on the MalaysianWings on NinerVictor forums to look for help.

Sorry that I can't be of much assistance.
