Attention Photographers - Copyright Violations

Mon Oct 31, 2011 8:19 pm

Hi All,

The following page is appearing to be an 'official' Airbus page on Facebook - it is not an official Airbus or EADS page - take one look and we're sure many of you will recognise your photos either with the copyright banner or it totally removed.

http://www.facebook.com/Airbus.page

Thought you might like to know.

Thanks and regards

Paul

Think I posted that link a few months back. I contacted numerous photographers, most care but I think a few couldn't be bothered by it. Thing is this kid is taking the photos and putting his own airbus copyright bar at the bottom of it. That's what ticks me off. I found a facebook copyright complaint page, but I never saw the photos removed. Everytime he would post a new photo I would reply "quit stealing photos" and never got any responses. There are other fan pages of planes out there with more of our photos.

Darren, how did you proceed? Did you fill out the copyright infringement report?

Seen one of mine there too, but the guy has credited my name as photographer and put its fb group's banner over Airliners! I am not sure crediting my photo is a copyright violation?!

Yes, Mehdi, it is.

Any copying or publishing of your photos without your consent is a copyright violation.

HI Thierry
I filled out the violation form and then emailed them links to the pictures here and on another site and the corresponding link on FB.
They had them down in under 12 hours.
Didnt stop him re popping them up.
Had several lively emails with him now whenever i see one i put a comment up clearly stating the image is stolen and I am the photographer..
FB is a big pain when it comes to guys like this stealing images and removing credits etc..

Hi All,

Here is an actual website that has done the same thing, it is quite blatant, you'll recognise your shots and this site limits access to a certain extent to you can't see all the shots though there are a lot,

http://www.avianews.com.ua/2011/10/29/top_25_foto/

Being an actual site you can contact the domain provider, bitte.com.ua their info link is;

info@bitte.com.ua

Thanks Darren!

The part I don't like (at all) on that violation form is where it says "Note that we routinely provide your contact information to the user that posted the content you are reporting", while having to provide a phone number and address.
That actually kept me from filing one.

At least he mentions Airliners.net as source.

This guy is claiming that he's removing the Airliners.net copyright bar in order to "make the photos more beautiful". If that was the case, why is he putting his own copyright bar on them since he's trying to make them "more beautiful"? He thinks that crediting our site but at the same time removing the copyright bar from this site makes it alright for him to do. Too many folks on Facebook (and on the internet in general) seem to think that if it's posted on the internet, it's free for the taking. I know I've reported several pages that contained photos from here as well as other aviation photo sites that were posted in violation of the photographer's copyrights. In some cases, these folks were claiming them as their own photos, which was stupid considering they falsified some of the info.

Nowhere on that page does this guy state that the page is not the official Facebook page for Airbus and that it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Airbus or EADS.

In addition to violating the copyrights and the photo usage requirements of this site, he is also using the copyrighted logos of Airbus in a manner that is not allowed either. Airbus really ought to go after this guy for passing himself off as if he was Airbus....

Maybe an approach from Airliners about his numerous copyright violations even after requests and emails from photographers may carry more weight.
At the end of the day Anet is losing lots of traffic because this guy is pinching photographs without permission.
More than happy to sign on as someone who has had at least 15 photos stolen and rebranded by this ratbag..

official' Airbus page on Facebook

Paul,

What about reporting this to Airbus as well i.e. their branding being used in a manner that can be degrading in the eyes of the general public. Most-if not all- major brands have strict laws in the use of their logos e.g. even the NASA "blue ball" logo cannot be used without official approval. If Airbus starts throwing their weight on FB, the page might finally comedown.

Anybody reading this from Airbus?

Hi All, I am looking into and working on a possible solution, at the minimum I am doing whatever I can to assist those who have images on that site. Whether this will get the desired result. I cannot say.

If anyone knows the name of the person behind the page, can you please send it to me via my profile or IM?

Thanks and regards

My photo is now removed, but I don't think it is going to stop the guy to uploading more of our photos.

Thanks Paul for following this up. Same as what Darren said I am also happy to sign on whatever we decide to take action.

Received a reply from Airbus.

Received "Thank you for your e-mail.

I appreciate you pointing this out to us and we will follow-up."

Hopefully Airbus will bring the hammer down and his entire page will go down.

I wouldn't be surprised if he reappears with a slightly tweaked page to denote that it is a fan page not affiliated with Airbus. Hopefully Facebook also put the kibosh on the user account this person has as well.

All members of this site that are on Facebook should be vigilant in keeping their eyes peeled for similar pages in which photos from this site are being used in a manner that violates the copyrights of our photographers as well as the photo usage policies of the site. Watermarks and copyright bars don't mean a thing to some of these folks, as I've seen pages in which the person behind the page passed off photos from the A.net database (as well as some of our competitors) as their own, but the photos had the watermarks and a slightly edited copyright bar (removing the photographer name from it).
