Vuescan Help Needed

Fri Nov 18, 2011 2:49 am

Hi guys,

Some of you might remember me as cfalk. After a vacation from photography for many years, I decided to haul out my old Nikon Coolscan IV ED slide-scanner and plug it in.

Unfortunately Nikon hasn't released a driver for this thing since Windows 98! But apparently Vuescan supports it so I downloaded it. But Vuescan apparently can't find the scanner.

I use Windows 7 64-bit on a modern i5 PC. The connection is via firewire, which surprisingly the PC came equipped with.

Any suggestions?

Hi Charles

One of the very early screeners I believe

If VueScan supports it it is possible that it is one of the scanners no longer supported on Windows 7.

Best thing to do would be to mail support at VueScan and let them know your dilemma.
Maybe someone else here can help.

Regards

That's right - I seem to recall having trouble with you

Seriously - the forums I have seen about it say that Vuescan uses its own driver. Nikon hasn't developed a 64-bit driver or anything compatible with XP or higher.

I don't expect that Firewire is plug & play, and figured that there would be an option to manually configure what scanner I'm using but I can't find it.

Another name from the past

I had exactly the same situation - Coolscan IV, new Windows 7 system. Now its a while since I sorted it out, but as I recall, all I did was download the drivers and software for the Coolscan V from the Nikon site.

http://europe-nikon.com/en_GB/product/software/nikon-scan-4

Works perfectly, however there are some options which apply only to the Coolscan V in the Nikonsan software which obviously don't work.

But I have my IV ED working on my Windows 64bit system just as well as when I first got it.

One other thing - as it had been getting on in years, I took it apart and cleaned everything in the optical path - it had got pretty dirty (just dirt in the air I guess). It made a big difference. However, I should stress this is not for the faint hearted - some points of the disassembly (and re-assembly) were tricky. I used this

to help me.

Cheers,

Suggest you try Hamrick for help, A lot of scanners seem to have problems with Windows 7. For products that are relatively recent, technical support for scanners from manufacturers is very short term. Good luck.

Am I guessing wrong that the use of a Firewire connection might also have something to do with it? Just astonishing how Firewire, which was the Concorde of its day, has become a technological dead end.

For me Firewire was not a problem - just took the firewire card supplied with my Nikon IV and stuck it in the new Windws 7 machine, worked fine (which was a bit of a surprise to be honest!). But you're right, it is scary how quickly technology becomes obsolete ... storage is my particular bugbear ... I have a collection of obsolete media which seemed to be THE solution at the time   Anyone still use Zip disks?

Cheers,

Hello

Ah, Zip Disks, yes still have mine. Haven't got a clue what is on them.

Charles, any luck with your scanner?

Not yet. Windows used to be a lot simpler to force an installation. There seems to be no way to do so in Windows 7.

Long weekend coming up - I hope to make some progress.

I have Zip disks too, just sitting there in a pile of floppies!

Hope you find a solution to your problem. Nothing can cause so much timewasting than missing or faulty drivers!

Hi Charles,

Which version of Windows 7 do you have? If you have Pro or Ultimate you may want to give Windows XP a try (or use online upgrade to upgrade your version). You can download and install Windows XP for free as a virtual machine from the MS web site:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w.../products/features/windows-xp-mode

This capability is provided for precisely the reason you have - backwards compatibility of older software and devices. However... and this is a big HOWEVER... your success will depend entirely upon whether the firewire drivers will work in the virtual machine - common interfaces like USB and serial will work, but firewire may be another story. I have read that most people don't have much luck with it, but you may be able to Google a solution.

Also take a look at http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/coolscan-vista-64.html ... it isn't 100% relevant but may provide some clues.

Finally, see the response from "Alex First" in this thread:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...38757-5899-4d37-9682-03ae9ea166f0/

Just some ideas,
Good luck
Sunil
