Luton Photo Locations

Fri Dec 02, 2011 8:12 pm

I am on family business Sunday and Monday in Luton. I've booked the Holiday Inn Express which over looks the Bizjet ramp.

I've never tried photography at Luton so was wondering best locations for daylight and nightime shots.

Crash gate the opposite side of the airport is great and there is a steady stream of biz jets but despite the little variety of airliners I always enjoy it there. It is good no matter which end of the runway is in use too
Head towards the M1 from the airport and then follow signs for Wheathampstead.
After a couple of miles you will see iron railings for a water treatment works. Turn left just after them (Chiltern Green Road ??) and up the hill. Farm on the right and take the next road left and after about another mile or so the road turns right with some houses in front of you, and a small triangular grassed area. Signposted dead end off to the left. Take that and at the top is the spot. A very small step is useful.

As well as the spot Mick just mentioned (Which I LOVE visiting!) you can always go to the bridge which is literally a 2 minute walk from your hotel (In fact you can probably see it from your room). Just head towards the terminal and walk up the banks either side, you can get some biz crossing the bridge from both sides (depending on sun direction, but you can always swap over). Stuff going to Ocean Sky won't cross the bridge, Harrods might not but Signature probably will.

There's also the short stay car park opposite the holiday inn which is good for some action from the 08 end

Thanks for that, I was wondering about how to get shots from where that 737 is, I'm hoping to get a good Night shot or two from there and maybe a couple out of the hotel window.............

I spent 3 weeks in the Ibis just across from the Holiday Inn (don't ask) and loved walking along the fence next to the holiday inn, Gulfstream tails right above your head!

Enjoy! I've always fancied a room there.

I just remembered some irritating fencing has gone up which obstructs any biz parking at the far south end of the ramp, as I found out a few days ago.

I think they'll be pretty backlit, as the only lighting I can see is behind the traffic.

Luton is always a pleasure to visit, I look forward to seeing some of your shots!

That fence is annoying. Saudi 737 HZ-101 parked there last night, so no shot of it. Managed a few other night shots from around the airfield, just hope they look as good on pc as they do on camera.

Stockwood Park is a nice location for shots on finals.

Got say a big thanks the locations and advise. Thanks Mick for the company too. I would actually put the other side of the airfield on par with the mounds at MAN as a great photo location for LTN. I will be down for a full day next time for sure. Not much variety in Airliners, but Bizjets...........lots

I love that spot at LTN, where else can you sit in the warmth of your car, with a cup of tea, until you see an aircraft on final approach, get out, and shoot some amazing angles of great subjects in gorgeous light and with a nice background?

If only I lived a bit closer! Glad you enjoyed it.

Well I had a go, it was very cold and windy on Saturday night. Seems resonable amount of light, The ramp staff inter-lock the aircraft, so this was the only one that was open enough to get a shot. Perhaps early on in the evening is better just as the aircraft have arrived and are parked face in before the ground staff get their hands on them.
