Good Dslr & Lense For Inflight Aircraft

Thu Jan 05, 2012 3:43 pm

Just wondering what sort of equiptment (Lenses) I would need to get those sweet close up contrail shots so many people seem to be coming up with. Planes cruising around 30/40 Thousand Feet for example.. Hope I am not being to vague.

I've just replied to your other other post! You need a telescope rather than a lens for that or at least a 300mm+ high specification lens. Something like the Canon 100-400 L, Sigma 50-500 or a prime.

EDIT: I forgot to add, very clear sky as well.

With 500mm you'll not be able to make it, I can show you a 500mm shot of a Antonov An-124 on flightlevel with heavy crop:

While these: (The most famous contrail shots I guess) is taken with 240mm.

My advise to you is, get a large canon L lens (500- or 400mm) and buy a 2.0x extender with it to make it around 1000mm focal length. That will get you there.

Good luck!
