Need JFK Airport Spotting Info (Terminal)

Sat Jan 07, 2012 10:13 pm

Hello Fellow A.netters, I am reaching out for some important information about JFK. I am going to be taking a trip to BOS in and I will be flying out of JFK. Train from Philly to JFK and then flying up to BOS. I need to know some information about JFK. I have the latest flight out of JFK to BOS so I can spend the day in the airport checking out all the international and domestic metal. I have never been to JFK before and I am wondering if it is possible to take a train inside security to all the different gates. Kinda like DFW, I remember being in ORD and not being able to get to the international terminal without going through security again with a international ticket. Will I be able to see all the planes I am hoping to be able to see. Any other information on JFK would be awesome I am really looking forward to it. Thanks for everyone's help and have a phenomenal day.

No you cannot. The Airtrain does a terminal loop - and it's free for that loop - but it is outside of security, and you will be limited to non-secure areas at any terminals you visit. I haven't tried to do any in-terminal spotting at JFK since way before 9/11, so I don't know how much you will be able to see. How long will you be at JFK? Maybe you can hook up with a friendly NYC spotter to get out to some of the usual off-airport spotting locations.

What Airline will you be flying to Boston?

If it's B6, there's plenty of nice spotting for most of the day this time of year from inside the northwestern side of T5. I was just there last week. You'll be looking through glass, of course, which doesn't make high quality photos easy, but it's nice in there and nobody will give you a hard time.

If you have time for outdoor spotting, try the T5 parking lot. Thanks to the demolition of T6, this can provide some nice views. You won't get any A380 action there, but it's the easiest on-airport spot that I know of. You'll need at least a reliable 160mm at that location for heavies, 200mm+ for RJs.

First off thanks for your response. I will be flying B6 and I am just wondering what type of metal ill be able to get a look at. Mostly B6 since it is their terminal? I waas hoping to catch a bunch of International birds. Ill have my camera with me but this will mostly be just viewing pleasure. Thanks again. Have a great day.

Well, it depends on where aircraft are landing. When I was there the 31's were in use. I'm not an expert on JFK's operations but I think the only thing you won't be able to see from this spot is the A380. Every time I've seen an A380 at JFK - landing or taking off - it's been on 31L, and you'll only see 31R from this location. But plenty of stuff will come by. Just in the short time I was there I saw heavies from BA, CX, CI, LX, EI, NH, 9W, AA, DL, UN, and MU. I didn't take photos of all of them, and most of my photos from that day were honestly pretty bad, but you'll see plenty.

If you're in that spot long enough, you're virtually guaranteed BA, IB, CX, QF, and NH because they all use neighboring T7 and more or less have to taxi past T5 to depart.

JFK is always abuzz with activity. But bring a big lens if you plan on taking A.net quality stuff.
