Best Spotting Locations

Mon Jan 09, 2012 11:29 pm

I am getting into amateur photography and I found an awesome unincorporated spotting area for SFO near the Marriott Hotel. Then I got to wonder what other great spots around the world exist? Not to see 150 planes of the same airline, like WN in MDW, AA in DFW or AF in CDG... I want a spotters paradise where I can build my portfolio.

LAX is a great place to see a wide variety of airlines.

MIA and JFK looks good to me. Personally I love HNL - I was there once and there is bunch of diferrent airlines from both sides of Pacific ocean. And obviously PAE with such diferrent colour schemes on Boeing machines.

You can't beat LHR. Lots of variety.

I'll second that, yesterday there were 659 arrivals from 73 different airlines. Also included in the 659 were a few executive bizjets and airliners.

Better start saving your cents now!

AMS / EHAM. Great up close spots, great light, great people, good food, etc.

I second that. What a wonderful airport to spot from!
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

I think MAN is pretty good. Not only do they have a few official areas, but quite a bit of variety too. In fact the last time i went up there, 2x Hercules landed!

Of the airports I've spotted at (LAX, various southern California airports, JFK, LHR, SFO) I think LAX is the best balance between variety, weather, and accessibility. Many people agree, though, so it's a bit hard to stand out from the crowd.

My home airport of ANC is pretty awesome when it comes to variety. Lots of cargo and classic airliners. Short hop around the airport to lake hood and you see lots of ga in the summer. Cops are nice and spotting access abounds. If you check out spotterswiki it lists the good spots but us locals have a few honey holes.

If you want international varieties and have some extra cash, check out my home airport(s) in Tokyo. NRT provides airliners from countries all over the world and have several great spots inside the terminal and around the perimeter and very easily accessible besides the 16R spot facing the Marroad Hotel in which you'll need a car. HND is also great for shooting and the new Intl terminal is nice. I'm sure many can vouch for this as well especially the Aussie spotters on here. Hello from another Virginian native.

No mention of KLAS or Vegas itself?? These shots were all taken in the last week. KLAS is wonderful in the winter time and we get great light. That along with cheap hotels and plenty of night life makes it "Top of the List" in my mind!!

Last year I think we were the Top 6 for U.S. traffic.

YVR has a nice mix of Asian heavies & local classics like Convair's, 727's & floatplanes, though the majority of movements are inevitable AC, QK & WS. The new fence all round the airport sucks but there is a new viewing platform which is great when 26L is in use.

LTN is my fave airport of all time, but you need to like bizjets. There is a great spot at a fire crash gate to the east of the runway and it is bizjet heaven, I have logged registrations from half of the globe there.

A bit closer to home for you, BFI & PAE are also always going to guarantee you something new and exciting.
