Help On Wide Angle Lens?

Wed Jan 11, 2012 2:16 pm

I guess this is more of a general photography question than aviation per se. I have a Canon DSLR with a APS-C sensor. I have a 17-50mm lens already. I was looking at a 10-24mm lens for a little more width. In the opinion of experienced photographers, do you think I'd really notice the difference of that lens being 7mm wider? I don't understand the physics of how much that would increase my FOV. Anyone any hints or suggestions on this?

The difference between 10mm and 17mm is quite a lot, it's nearly twice as wide. I use my Sigma 10-20 EX quite a lot. It's great for cabin and flight deck photos as well as museums and travel. What is it you want to use it for? Do you require anything wider than 17mm?

As daz pointed out, the difference is substantial. You can find some samples when googling for "10mm 17mm FOV comparison" or the like, such as these:

In my opinion if you own a crop sensor you need to have an UWA lens. Believe me, i tried to get out of buying one. Went to a 17-55 and thought I could have the best of both worlds. One a crop sensor 17MM is just not wide enough (for me) for interior shots and landscape / travel photography / cityscape, etc.

I have an 11-16 Tokina and think it's one of the best UWA lenses every produced. I wouldn't mind owning a Canon 10-22 though, but love my Tok.
All opinions expressed by me are my own opinions & do not represent the opinions in any way of my employers.

Thank you all for your advice. I think I'll buy the lens.
