Update To "Tips On Buying A 100-400L"

First off, thank you to all that replied to that thread a few weeks ago. I would have replied there but it seems to be locked?

I did manage to pick up a new 100-400L from B&H and that order was fulfilled just as promised including shipping. After the lens arrived, I ran it through a few tests and they all met my expectations. I was not blown away but the quality is very good and that extra reach is something that can not be substituted. I found a test for this lens that another guy did on a 100-400L at this link http://www.pbase.com/liquidstone/image/86416630 and ran mine through the same test to compare the results and mine looked very similar to his. This was a relief as I dont think I am in the infamous "bad copy" club that I am starting to think is minute to non-existant. I also compared this lens to my old 75-300 with IS and of course the 100-400L won every time, although I think I did have one of the sharpest 75-300IS lenses out there compared to the reviews which that lens normally gets. I have managed to get out to the airport once so far and here are the results.

In the end, I am really happy with the results and look forward to getting more use out of this lens. I do have to say that the push/pull is definetly something that will take getting used to. Not so much the pushing and pulling aspect but using the tightening ring along with it. It is hard to find that sweet spot where you can get it to slide but it also stays in place and wont creep.

If anyone is on the fence with this lens, I say go for it and have no worries if you use B&H.

One final thought and something that others may/probably already know but I just learned about. When testing a lens, it is really helpful to use the live view manual focus. I tried the same dollar bill head shot numerous times with AF and was not able to get it quite as sharp as the one provided at the link. When I put it on manual focus through live view though, wow, it was really very sharp. The AF works great, but until I ran the test I never even though about using manual in live mode. Great for testing, but not going to work so well with an aircraft moving at 150kts.
