Nikon Coolpix S6200 good enough for a.net?

Wed Feb 08, 2012 11:32 pm

Hi all, my friend is looking for a camera that can take pictures that have a chance of acceptance on airliners.net. He said his budget is $300, and I said unless you are getting a used model, there is no chance of getting a DSLR for that cheap. He searched around, and found a Nikon Coolpix S6200. The local camera shop said it is almost as good as a DSLR. What do you think? If this doesn't work, any other suggestions?

All the pictures I have on Airliners.net have been taken with my S6100: http://www.airliners.net/search/phot....search?photographersearch=Kaphias

While it's a great all around camera, it's really not good for getting shots onto Airliners.net. You won't be able to get any shots of planes in the air, the lighting has to be perfect, you can't use the far end of the zoom range, and you can hardly crop at all (more like a trim, really). The only reason I think I've been able to get 16 shots on here with it is because they are almost all unique in some way, be it a new registration, special event, or just a cool shot. I'd advise against getting the S6200 and go for a used DSLR.

I think if your local camera shop is telling you a compact point and shoot is almost as good as a DSLR, you need to find a different local camera shop. Other than close-up static shots taken on bright sunny days, such a camera is simply not going to cut it if the goal is acceptance here. Investing in a used DSLR with a decent lens would be a much better option.

1.) There's nothing wrong with a used DSLR, if it hasn't been abused.
2.) If I worked at a camera store, I'd tell you the camera is almost as good as a DSLR too.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Ok, I'll keep that in mind.

I had to take my new DSLR for in warranty minor fix on the grip in OCT, as usual would take a couple of weeks before getting it back . I bought an used D50 for $150 and was surprised to find it was amazing. After checking the shutter count it was just 4000. The quality is very good and no P&S will match it.
