Best Spotting Airport In Europe Is..?

Sat Feb 18, 2012 6:21 pm

Hello everyone, hope youre all doing great!

I live in Sweden in north Europe and planing a spottingtrip for any airport in Europe, and thinking of Heathrow, Frankfurt or Amsterdam anything else with alot of departures and arrivals and "big" airplanes

What is the best spotting airport in Europe in your opinion?

Regards Eskil.

I had a really good morning at LHR, plenty of exotic heavies coming in, the runway setup guaranteed a steady flow of arrivals (not sure if the runway pattern has changed) and if you feel like some smaller birds you can take the tube to LCY!

I've seen some good shots from AMS too though, and I believe that there are bike paths around the airport perimeter, so very easy to do by foot / rental bike.
Radial engines don't leak oil, they are just marking their territory!

Hi,

Although I do not travel often I could suggest Dublin, They have an AF 747 on Saturdays constant A330's all week and plus some of the smaller European airlines like Blue Air fly there!

its not much!

Hope it helps,

I've heard that Zurich is very easy to go planespotting without a car. There is also lots of heavys and also SR-technics with some nice planes on maintenance. I would go there!

In addition to the already mentioned LHR/AMS/FRA/ZRH, i'd add in MAN (very spotter friendly) and also the great observation decks at DUS.

I'd go for LHR. First of all, you should be able to get decent ticket fares to fly into LHR. Furthermore, all spotting locations can very well be done without car. There are lots of spotting locations around the airport and you can get there by bus, underground and if needed just a small walk (eg 10 minutes). Furthermore, unless wind direction changes, you perfectly know where aircraft will takeoff and land. Only drawback of LHR is that eventually you get bored with the BA 747 and 777, not to mention the A319's

AMS is a good location as well, but everytime I go there, I need my car more than once to switch between locations. They also appear to switch the traffic flow patterns a bit more. And, according to me, the visitors are less exotic than eg LHR (which gets QF, NZ,...).

Greets and have fun,

I'll add CPH to that list. Easily accessible spots right under the approach path for both runways and I've never once had an issue with security or anything. I'll add a video I came across on YouTube showing the excellent spotting available:

I've been in BCN last weekend, and found it a nice place to spot. I'd not go as far as saying "best in Europe", but it was easy to access, spotter-friendly, and the light was fantastic (I may even try my luck and add 2-3 to the queue here   ).

Plus, the airport has a fantastic city attached to it.

Finally someone who knows the best ways to spot in CPH - Everyone is talking about "Flyvergrillen" but personally i think that the best spotter place is the approach to RWY 22 and 04 (L/R)

Agreed. Flyvergrillen is fine to go have a beer and something to eat and enjoy watching some movements, but it's one of the worst spotting areas. You'll miss the start of the take-off run and the rotation on 22R and you'll likely miss touch downs on 22L. Fine place to sit, especially if you're with kids or your other half and don't want to drag them to the best spotting places, but I wouldn't go there purely for spotting. I love sitting on the hill behind the car park under the approach path for 22L in summer. You're in a nice isolated spot with a great ocean view and aircraft just a few hundred feet above you. Can't think of a better way to spend a summer afternoon.
