Advice On X2 Lens Extenders.

Sat Feb 25, 2012 10:06 pm

Hi all,

I want to buy a good X2 lens extender for my Canon 70-200mm F4 and my Canon 200mm F2-8 Prime lens. I would appreciate any advice or recommendations on whether there is a particular brand that in terms of optical performance is second to none, plus any personal experience, likes dislikes using a X2, etc. I am prepared to pay for quality.

Thanks in advance.

Well, depending on what camera you have, the Canon 2xTC may not have autofocus for your F4 lens. It makes the F4 into an F8, and only some Canon cameras can autofocus at F8.

A coworker let me borrow his 2xTC to try with my 70-200 F4L, and on my Rebel XS, no autofocus. Image quality looked pretty good, though.

The 1.4xTC would have autofocus, since it makes an F4 lens into an F5.6.

Hi vikkyvik,

Sorry my bad, I have a Canon 60D. So do you think the 1.4XTC should autofocus with my Canon 200mm 2.8 Prime? I might have to get my censor cleaned as it might also show up dust spots approaching that Fstop.

Thanks anyhow!

Yes, it should (believe it should AF with the 2xTC as well). There's what seems to be an accurate list here:

I would get both, but start with the 1.4x mkII. The 1.4 will AF with both lenses and the 2x will AF with the 2.8.

I've never had an issue with the IQ from my 1.4 ii or 2x iii. No complaints, I could use either of them all day and never take it off, and be quite happy with the results. I usually try to shoot at f/8 as long as I can, raising the ISO a bit to help. That being said, I do have accepted shots here, and OK results shooting my extenders wide open. Really try to keep it at f/8 though.

You can't go wrong purchased the 1.4x when you own the lenses you listed, I've found them very handy.

FYI, I literally just bought a 1.4xTC today for my 70-200 F4. Will take some photos tomorrow, and can post about my results if you want.

Will actually be the first test for both lens and TC on airplane shots.

Thanks guys,

I will take your advice and get both the1.4x mkII and 2x. It will be good fun trying to get some new and interesting shots with them attached, especially takeoff's and landings.

Just FYI, I posed a couple photos taken with my new 70-200 F4L + 1.4TC in this thread:

I'm quite happy with the combination so far!

Only advice is to choose the 2x III over the 2x II. The few dollars extra is well worth it. The 2x III is so good that my 1.4x II mostly stays in the bag unless I need the light.
Quality is definately good enough for Airliners

Hi Guys,

I went to Jessops today, a major UK photographic chain, to test a Canon 2X III using a Canon 60D camera with a 70-200mm F4. It only worked in manual focus mode and not in autofocus. I set the camera to auto and manual, shutter priority, aperture priority and program mode, when I pressesd Q it displayed MF everytime, and yes I did check and the lens was set to AF.

Can you confirm that Canon 2X III autofocuses and which camera and settings did you use to achieve autofocus.

Thanks in advance.

The Canon EF 2x III will only give you AF on your 60D when paired with an F2.8 lens or faster.

With an F4 lens and 2x converter you will only get AF on a 1 series body.

The 2x on your F4 lens drops the maximum aperture to F8, only the 1 series bodies will AF at F8, your 60D is limited to F5.6/6.3

Thanks ua935,

I have a Canon 200mm F2.8 Prime, which was the lens I was going to use it primarily with anyway, unfortunately Jessops didn't have one handy at the time. I have to email the Jessops rep now, I promised him I would let him know what feedback I got from you guys. He's part time ex Daily Mail Photographer.

Did you read my previous replies?

Thanks, I had read them vikkyvik, but sometimes it doesn't stick. I have now set a new low benchmark for the onset of senility. It's 44 by the way.
