Photo Editing, Noise Reduction

Sat Mar 24, 2012 12:38 pm

Hallo

This is a follow up to my question about blue sky.

Which noise reduction programs are the best to get rid of grain and noise. I know about Topaz and Neatimage. Topaz tends to produce bands in blue sky.

Thank you
Cornelius

I can only tell you what I use. For my noisier shots, I use Adobe Camera Raw for Photoshop CS5 for RAW editing. The noise reduction tool there is pretty good, I think.

I haven't tried any standalone NR programs or plugins.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

I use the Neat Image plug-in for Photoshop Elements. Results are good when used in moderation.

Noise reduction is always part of my initial workflow using Adobe Camera RAW for CS5 (or Lightroom 3 which has the same raw editor).

What photo editing software are you using currently? The noise reduction that comes with PSE is basic but effective.

I find Helicon Filter to be very effective: http://www.heliconsoft.com/heliconfilter.html

I use Adobe CS5 for noise reduction. I think there is a benefit to applying noise reduction at the point of conversion from RAW as the system has the maximum data possible to work with, hence reducing the chance of banding or other unwanted artifacts from appearing.

However I'm not sure it is the best noise reduction. For major tasks I use neat image which offer more control (but this is more for extreme photography - max ISO, poor light).

For light clean up of skies etc. ACR works best for me.

Cheers,

Colin

I am really fond of Noise Ninja, I am truly amazed with the results. Some of the images that got accepted here looked like unusable rubbish with no hope of fixing. Imo much better than ps5 built-in nr.

Neat image plugin for Photoshop. I download prepared noise profiles for my EOS7D for various ISO. And I always delete half of noise. It takes 10 seconds to get rid of noise.
