Discovery/Enterprise Swap At IAD- Will U Be There?

Mon Apr 16, 2012 12:52 am

I won't be there when Discovery arrives Tuesday. But this'll certainly be an event that will get some of the local photogs to come out to DULLES.

I've been told they'll use 19L/1R. Any other info?

Does anyone know when it's getting lifted off the 741 and when Enterprise is taking her ride up to NY? I'd like to make it to DULLES to shoot the departure.

Its slated to leave IAD on the 23rd, at about 8:30AM. That being said, morning departures from Dulles are a total crapshoot, especially if they depart Runway 30 (as I expect they will).

I should be able to make it. If they do indeed land on 19L/1R, then I suppose the Udvar-Hazy parking lot will be the place to be. The website claims that the fly-over of DC and the surrounding areas is to take place between 10-11 AM, so there should hopefully be enough time to beat traffic and get in position at Dulles. If anyone else has more information regarding spotting/photography locations, I'm all ears.

I'm pretty excited, and I really hope I get to see it, considering my friends and I road-tripped down to Florida last year to watch Endeavor's last flight only to have it scrubbed!

Anyone else going to be at Udvar-Hazy?

Vincent,
Keep in mind that shooting from the UH parking lot will result in direct backlighting.

Sully Park or someplace along Rt 50 east of the extended centerline would give better results.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the information! As you can tell, I've have not actually spotted at Dulles yet, but I have seen photos in the database here taken from the Udvar-Hazy parking lot. Now that I think about it, all of those photos are most likely taken of the afternoon arrivals. Sully Park seems like a great place to try instead.

Yes, that is the request from the Smithsonian and the flight crew told me they will do it if the winds and ATC play along. They will also do a runway overfly prior to landing (if nothing changes).

17th to the 19th is demate. It will probably take 1.5 days. A lot of festivities for the 19th including the nose to nose with Enterprise (Constitution)  . Following the nose to nose, they will start the mounting Enterprise(Constitution) immediately after and also should take about 2 days.

That is great! Thanks!

Does this start at wheels up or daybreak or something? The reason I ask is that it has been long process to get her ready to fly and we have been engaged in many activities associated with the ferry flight. Each one of those events is a milestone as it is the final time they will be done.

Hi everyone,

I just returned from Dulles and was treated to a great show. There was a ton of people there cheering the Shuttle on, as it made 2 fly-overs of runway 1R before coming in for a landing. The first fly-over was apparently not planned, and I arrived just in time! I had barely parked on the side of the road and opened the camera bag before she came hurtling down the runway! She then left to joyride around DC airspace before returning for another fly-by before landing. I just finished editing some shots and uploaded one of them, and requested priority screening also. I hope it gets accepted, as the weather/lighting was not really cooperating. Can't wait to see other's photos! Thanks.

That was part of the plan. I had a discussion with the flight engineer prior to the flight and he started this sequence to me. This was to ensure that if they have to cut short and land the flyby had been already taken care of.

Somehow, you picture does not show. can you check that?

Glad you had a good time. It is a sight that makes most jaws to drop.

Thanks for the info! I didn't hear anywhere about the first fly-by, but your explanation makes sense. We were pleasantly surprised anyway, considering we got one more fly-by than we thought!

The photo doesn't show anymore because it went through screening, and was rejected for grain. I was worried about that. I applied noise reduction while processing the RAW file, but I suppose it was not enough. The thing is, I have photos from all 3 of the fly-by's. The photo I submitted was from the first fly-by, with the best lighting/sun, but were taken further away from the others (before we got a chance to get into better position).

The photos from the other 2 fly-by's required less zoom, but the lighting was poorer, so I'm not sure what to do. Can anyone please provide some suggestions? Should I try to edit photos from the 1st pass, with better lighting, but more zoom, or the other approaches, with less zoom, but worse lighting? Or simply try to apply more noise reduction to to fix the submitted one? I really would like to get one of these accepted. Thanks in advance for any help!

For reference, here is the rejected photo:

And here is an edited shot of the final approach to compare the lighting:

Indeed it does Suresh, as my jaw dropped although it was behind my viewfinder at the time so I don't think anyone noticed.

I got stuck in heavy traffic and missed the first early low approach. I caught a glimpse of it from a red light but an SUV in front of me blocked my view. I wasn't sure if I was seeing things or not. I later figured I caught a quick glimpse of some other heavy jet arrival. I managed to hike up to the Air and Space Museum overpass of Route 28 for the 2nd low approach and landing.

I've only had a chance to edit one photo which I've subsequently uploaded here. Hopefully imageshack didn't compress it:

We had a great time today although it is sad the shuttle will no longer fly. The first pass was in decent light. If I get a minute in the next day or so I'll try to upload but these are from today:

Hi guys,

I have a question primarily aimed at the screeners: Any chance of priority screening for photos of Discovery + Enterprise from the transfer of ownership ceremony today? Thanks!
