LHR Terminal 3 Spotting

Thu May 03, 2012 10:12 pm

Hello, on June 1st I am stopping in Heathrow's Terminal 3 for four hours. Are there any good spotting places in this terminal? I want to get some good pictures before my first A380 flight to Singapore!

Thanks,
Amrit

Spotting or photos? There's a difference.

Like are there any good windows to shoot through? I looked through the database and I didn't see any pictures that were taken from T3 in the past 10 years, so I was just wondering.

Hi kann123air,

I have been lucky to have departed from the dedicated A380 Terminal 3 a few times. As far as I recall the only spot you can get any photos of the A380 from is once you enter the departure lounge and even then the views of the A380 aren't that great. It all depends which gate the aircraft is parked at. There is one gate that gives you a sort of three quarter view of the A380, but definitely good for head on shots. As I said it all depends on the gate, some gates position the aircraft so that the airbridge blocks a good portion of the front of the aircraft as seen from the departure lounge.

Another thing to consider is time of departure. If it is daytime reflections might be a slight problem, more so at night.

I cant comment on taking photo's from other non A380 area's in T3, it's been over a decade since I flew Air New Zealand on their B747- 400's.

You may have more luck when you arrive in Singapore, as you exit the aircraft, there are large windows that give you a view of the front of the A380, but I am not too sure what the Singapore authorities position is on taking photo's from airport boarding and disembarking areas.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I have over 12 hours in Singapore, so I am planning to go to Changi Beach Park and shoot there. I hope that turns out well.

I was kind of worried about the reflections, since my AA 777 from DFW arrives at 7:50 a.m., and the Singapore A380 leaves at 11:30, so there will most likely be some reflections. I guess I'll just have to work around that, though.

Thanks again!

Hi kann123air,

I'm sure you all ready know this, but make sure you have taken all the photo's you want to take from inside the airconditioned terminal, before going outside, because Singapore is HUMID city night and day. When you come back in side to the airconditioned terminal or shops your lens will fog up. Don't worry it will eventually aclimatise, hopefully your not in a rush to take photo's.

If the fog pesists or appears on a lens element deep down then you can use a hair dryer to help evaporate it, no hair dryer then shining a desk lamp down the lens does the trick as well, just be careful to not let it get too hot.

Wow, thanks for telling me. I didn't know this since I am a really beginner photographer (I only have two pictures on airliners.net).

Would Changi Beach Park be the ideal place to shoot in the heat and humidity, or at this point in the summer would it be worth it? I have read of some good spots inside Changi airport for shooting....but I still am leaning toward the Beach Park.

Unfortunately, kann123air I have never visited Changi Beach Park, but the pictures I have seen on anet taken from inside Singapore Terminal 3 have been excellent, so it's really upto you. I'm personally not a hot humid weather person. 5 minutes outside in that climate and it looks like I've just stepped out of a shower.

Haha thanks for the input. Your just like me with the climate!

So Terminal 3 is the best place.....that's what I've read on other websites too. I'll be sure to go there, and I'll give the Beach Park a try, but as you said the humid weather might dampen my plans.

If you need to go to T3 it sounds like you are not flying on Singapore Airlines A380.

If that is the case there is an above ground shuttle train that moves between the various Terminals at Changi. Once you arrive at T3 just go to the departure entry area, past the vast check in hall. Either side is a lift or you can use the escalators, go to the top floor where you can access the public indoor aircraft viewing platform in airconditioned comfort. It overlooks the apron and runway 02R/20L or is it 02L/20R I can't remember exactly.

Good Luck

Oh no, I was just saying that I'll probably go there to shoot.
