Dubai Approach Shots

Tue May 29, 2012 3:08 pm

Hi,

Could anybody please give me any help with Dubai arrival spots?

Where is the best place to get a taxi to as I won't have a car. How likely am I to get hassled or arrested by the police? I will have my Canon 300mm F/2.8 L IS and 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS so not very easy to keep a low profile! I will go to the Emirates staff car park but think my shots will be destroyed by heat haze next week from there so would prefer to do some arrivals instead.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks

Hi LGW340,

I had a look through the photo database, specific to Emirates A380 to start with. There was a number of shots taken at Dubai International Airport of this particular aircraft and airline from different angles on the gound. In particular there was a good one taken of the A380 by Thomas Posch from the roof top of the Moevenpick Hotel in Dubai.

Just a suggestion, but you could try contact Thomas Posch and other photographers that were in Dubai to find out how and where their shots were taken from around Dubai Airport. You could look at the data base for other Emirates aircraft including the B777-200ER/LR/300ER, A330-200, B747-400F etc to get more photographers contact details.

Hope this helps.

Depending on the runways in use, there are several locations. I can offer a number of suggestions, but you need to consider a few things. I was there last week - it was stinking hot. The sun is very high in the sky now. Heat haze and a sand-storm giving seriously crappy conditions. I'm certainly not telling you to not bother, but without a car you'll be seriously exposed. That's not an issue in the winter, but in June you will need to be very careful. Check www.suncalc.net to see the sun position at this time of year. It's not wonderfully conducive.

In terms of the police, yes, if seen you will almost certainly be taken to the police station for a LONG talk. You may also be asked to sign a document (in Arabic) which I believe states that you "won't do it again". I've lived and worked in Dubai and, touch wood, have never had an issue. However, plenty of people I know have been interviewed by the police and eventually released (after several hours). I don't know anyone who's had equipment or cards/film confiscated.

In summer it's not unusual for them to be on 30s all day long. If they are, my recommendation would be to try shooting departures in the morning, then move the the east end in the afternoon to shoot approaches. Nearly all departures will be from 30L. You'll need to be north of the runway until around 11am, between 11 and 12 the sun is almost straight down the runway. After about 12:30 you could move to the south side.

None of these locations is great without a car
Early am until about 11 : N25.272 E55.348 (car park, two metro stations within a short walk - Abu Hail & Al Qiyadah)
Early pm until about 2 : N25.262 E55.336 (small park with some trees for cover)

Early to mid afternoon, go to the east side for approach shots.
Somewhere in the area of N25.222 E55.408 BUT, this area is very exposed. You can take a taxi to Carrefour in Mirdiff and take a short walk. There is no cover here whatsoever, so not only are you exposed to the elements, but you'll be rather obvious.

I really think it's hard without a car, especially in summer. If you do go for it, take care and be as discreet as you can. Good luck.

Guessing the whopping 4 words of Arabic that I know won't help me

I haven't had an issue, but I know several who have been less lucky.

And what was the police explanation the reason of that? Does taking pictures of a/c is illegal in Dubai?

I don't know since I've been fortunate enough to not be picked up by them.

I don't know if it's actually against the law, but all around the perimiter of DXB are signs saying photography is forbidden.

I'm just passing on my experiences and knowledge. I would always suggest caution whenever taking photos at any airport anywhere in the ME. I've done plenty in DXB and not had an issue, but I know plenty who have.

I was out a Heathrow Airport taking photo's the other day and was chatting to a fellow photographer, the subject of Dubai Airport came up, he said he knew someone who was taking shots from the car park at Dubai Airport, was spotted by the police, taken away for questioning. In the end he was made to erase all his shots, but fortunately he backed up his best ones on the camera's memory so no real loss.

Wow, a DXB spotters page (and a nice one at that!), congrats! Best wishes, and don't get caught (I wonder if etisalat/TRA will block it LOL)!
