Borders

Thu May 31, 2012 4:51 pm

I got several photos rejected recently for having small borders on the edges. Surprised, I went and looked at my rejected photos section, and sure enough there are minute borders along the top and right side.

My question is why are these appearing? As I have never had this problem in the past, I can't help but wonder why. Recently I've been shooting with a Nikon 3100, I've also been exporting my photos through my editing software (iPhoto) instead of using a image hosting site to reduce file size. Could it be one of these, or could it even be the Anet. uploader? Am I the only one whose been having this problem?

Quoting g38 (Thread starter):
I've also been exporting my photos through my editing software (iPhoto)

That would be the most likely culprit.

could it even be the Anet. uploader?

Then everyone would be affected, but this is not the case.

Thants why I asked. I've got a couple photos in the queue at the moment. If they get rejected for borders as well, then I'll have to rethink my uploading methods.

I see two images in the queue right now, neither of which have any problems with borders. They may have other issues though, so you might want to try to get them pre-screened.

I should only have one... the one of the prowler. I'm guessing grain/soft. I can't seem to win these days on that front. My first reaction is that is must be the camera... time for a new one!   Perhaps I need to stick to broad daylight. On the other hand I just got an broad daylight L-39 shot rejected for being soft... who knows.

I might be able to help with this. Do you have a way to scale the image beyond the size of the canvas area? This should in theory resolve the issue if you can do that in iPhoto.

I've seen it before in other applications and even experienced it myself.

I'm not sure what you mean by " scale the image beyond the size of the canvas". I can scale, crop, or export the image in whatever size I want.

We are thinking of different things then, and someone will come here and yell at me soon I suspect.

What steps are you taking in iPhoto? Have you tried the Apple support forums for this issue?

No I have not tried the apple support forums. In my experience, they're almost worthless. If I wanted a list of FAQs...

Anyway, in the past after editing and cropping my photo to suite, I would upload it to flickr, and from there to Anet. This is most likely what I will have to start doing again.

Recently I had been exporting the photo directly from iPhoto and uploading it directly to Anet. This allowed me to precisely max out the 1mb photo size limit giving me more control, greater quality, and unfortunately borders.

That's strange. See the following thread on photoshop stuff with a similar issue:

Annoying Problem: Borders Appearing In Photoshop.. (by Whappeh Oct 22 2007 in Aviation Photography)

It sounds similar to your problem, but in a different program. Look at the suggestion of bottie:

Can you do something like that in iPhoto?

I think he's right in that it happens when I sharpen the photo. I ended up cropping the photo larger than I wanted it, exporting it (it had borders plainly visible), and then importing it, cropping it to the desired size, only to export it again, but this time without borders. Frankly its a pain in the ass, but I'm running a version of iPhoto thats one release out of date. Tomorrow I'm going to try to upgrade and see if that helps.
