JFK Spotting: Anyone For Week Of June 11?

Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:06 pm

I plan to be on Long Island from June 11-June 14 and would be interested in some photography of aircraft in and out of JFK. I have familiarized myself with the various locations, but would prefer to have some company rather than be out there solo. If anyone is planning on spotting there during these days, I'd sure would like to tag along.

Thanks!

I'd love to join you, but will probably be working. If you haven't already, check out www.nycaviation.com We have an extensive spotting guide to JFK, and if you post on the forum, you may have a better chance of finding a spotting companion. It seems like most every day, one of our members is around the airport.

Thanks Moose. I'm planning a visit all the same...hopefully I"ll run into some photographers out there. I checked out the guide to the spotting locations--very useful and well composed. Any updates on visits from the NYPD?

I haven't noticed too many encounters with law enforcement recently. It usually is hit or miss, a lot of times they show up because a "concerned citizen" called and they have to check it out. As always, have your ID, be polite and professional, and you should be fine.

If you didn't see it at NYCA (I don't recall if it is posted in the spotting guide) you can check JFK ATIS by phone at (718) 995-8188. It gives you the same recorded ATIS broadcast that goes out over the radio. It's a big help when trying to figure out the active runways when you are headed out.

I just got back from a few days of spotting up there and had a great time. Caught the Space Shuttle Enterprise, Air Force One, and the first Hawaiian Air flight into Kennedy all in those 3 days without any law enforcement issues whatsoever.

Even while photographing AF1, the Secret Service sitting in their car a few feet away from me didn't say a word.

And now I have just jinxed myself to have a run-in with an LEO with a major authority complex the next time I'm out! LOL

Since I plan to only spend one day, any recommendations as to where I'd get the maximum exposure? My lenses range from the 70-200 f2.8 to the Sigma 150-500.

Thanks again for all the posts!

All of my shots from last week(except the Shuttle) were taken with the same Sigma, at different locations. It will serve you well at Panera, Inwood Park, Bayswater, and Howard Beach(HoBe). My copy does well at f/10 and I always end up using it more than my 70-300VR there. You will need to be a LOT closer to the action to make good use of the 70-200 unless you have a TC. Costco would work with it though.

Sorry I can't join you, but with decent weather there is usually somebody out on many days. And you never know- Kennedy sometimes gets a rare visitor that you could be graced with- my lucky break was an unannounced Il-96 a few years ago.

Have an incredible time!

Megatop:

I've been meaning to post about my visit to JFK...thanks for the tips. I made it out to Bayswater SP. Great spot for 13R departures. Unfortunately, the skies got overcast during my stay there and while I saw 2 A380 departures (Korean and Lufthansa), the lighting was not the best. I had thought about returning during the latter part of the week, but it was a long drive from Greenport! The parking lot in front of Panerra did not work out so well since aircraft were departing on 13R and 13L and were also backlit in the afternoon.

I imagine Bayswater would be great for 31L and 4L arrivals! By the way, did not run into anyother spotters--just some friendly folks who were out there fishing. It was quite thrilling for me to see some thing different than Delta (at CVG); the international tails sure make it interesting.

Thanks again for the helpful hints and tips on the locations. Will definetly stop by when I'm back on LI again.

Sorry you didn't have better conditions, Jehan. Bayswater is good for 31L arrivals and 13L departures most of the day, and 4L/R arrivals and 22L/R departures (especially heavies) in the morning. Panera is really only good for 31R arrivals, you won't get anything usable off of 13 from there. And yes, the fishermen at Bayswater are a fixture, and mostly very friendly.

If you spend time on Long Island during your next trip, stop in to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, and the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport (FRG) I'm a volunteer at the AAM, and we have a number of flying WWII aircraft you can check out.
