Best Time To Spot At LHR?

Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:34 pm

Just wondering, when is the best time to spot aeroplanes at LHR? I usually go there on a Saturday and in the holidays go normally in the week.

Okay, joking aside.....

Do you want to collect numbers or take photos?

To take photos, I would only collect the numbers if a new aircraft is flying in like the China Southern the other day.

For photos the place is only really any good if they're on the 27s this time of year (Myrtle and the A30 if you want to avoid heat-haze). There are a couple of evening spots for 09L that are okay too. I tend to only go for photos in the winter.

West-east runways are awful during the summer - try BHX instead, which has a more north-south alignment.

I went to BHX a couple of weeks ago and it was very good, no problem with light. I've been to the 27s a lot and its been good, but in the evening its been awful. I'll try the 09L locations, haven't tried that area yet.

Thanks

The north perimeter road (Bath Road) is the place to be in the evenings for 27 arrivals/departures. There's also a roundabout near the 09L approach that's good after 19:00.

Don't forget that the sun's angle in the evenings will favour 27 arrivals, as the light will be nose-on rather than tail-on.

I would normally go to the Bath road area anyway, as well as Myrtle Avenue and I will now go down to LHR later to get some pics. I will also go to the roundabout, I presume it's by Terminal 5.

Once again, Thanks
