ILA Berlin 2012, Questions

Hello everybody,

I am starting to be in a state of abstinence from airshow this year.
Unfortunately, I have had not the chance to attend any airshow till now... but given that in September In Berlin there will be the ILA Airshow I am starting to consider it.

Well, To be honest I don't know so much about this airshow... so I have thought to ask here to know some more.

First, probably the most important one:
The airshow is held at the Schoenefeld airport: will the airport be 100% with civil flights during the days of the show?
Because there are several flights that I could take that could take me in SXF airport. (And add that they're also the most convenient ones!)

Then, let's come to our business: In one question... what it is like? Would you "recommend" it to a friend?

I am interested in both static and air displays, even if for the latter I am a bit limited with my 70-200+1.4x. But no matter, I can substitute close-ups with some "well composed" images. (at least, in my opinon! LOL)
So, there will be a considerable number of good birds over there? Both for the static and the air displays.

Finally... another issue.
I would like to enjoy the show at its best. You would tell me "go in trade days: no people, it's easier to enter the exhibited aircraft etc."
Ok, I am ready also to pay something more for a trade ticket... but I am just a student and I am wondering if, with a "trade ticket" in my hands, they would let me inside even if I'm not a pro in the sector.

Feel free to add anything related that could be in keeping with my requests also, if you have, any personal experience!

First of all I must say that I have never been to ILA myself but I am quite informed about
the show as I considered going there last time and talked to some people who
regularly attend.

If it pays off for you depends on what you expect and what you want to get. Static exhibition is
great to watch and get close to aircraft but hard to get uncluttered shots as always at such events.

At airshows in Germany flying displays are affected by strong regulations. Unlike some years
ago display teams are permitted to fly again but are quite limited - no formation aerobatics and head-to-head crossovers if I remember correctly. So expect a different and less thrilling routine by the known teams, this year the Turkish Stars will be there and they will likely not be able to show all their usual maneuvers.
The flying is also quite distant and high at times so a long lens is needed for many items at least 400mm. Taxiing shots were possible in the past if you manage to get to a place in the front. I don't know if these kind of photos
are still possible at the new show area.

The show is in a new place this year follwing the ongoing construction of BBI airport so I can not comment on the layout of this new showground but you are supposed to face the sun resulting in backlight photos.

All these factors are the reasons why I never took the effort to go there and probably won't go in the future. For
airshow action photography there are much better places even in a weak airshow-year like 2012 is in Europe.

In your case I would consider the NATO days in Ostrava, Czech Republic or Slovak AF airshow in Sliac, Slovakia both in September instead. Better photo opportunities and some eastern heavy metal present there!
