Nikon 80-400mm

Wed Oct 31, 2012 4:18 pm

Dear guys,
I am thinking in buying a Nikon lens 80-400mm I have heared rumours that the current lens has its AF slow comparing it with other lenses. Can you confirm yr opinion about it and also can you confirm that Nikon is going to issue an improved version of this lens after Christmas??
thanks

The AF is slow compared with current Nikon AF lenses, especially the AF-S models.

If you're shooting airliners, then in nearly all circumstances, the slower AF isn't an issue. If you're trying to follow a displaying fighter at an air show, then it will struggle, even if you're in continuous focus mode.

It's a decent lens in good light but does struggle in sub-optimal light. I used one for several years and managed OK with it (I have plenty of shots here taken with it).

For what it provides, I think it's overpriced. I wouldn't go back to it, but that's because the two lenses I've replaced it with are so much better (probably the best two zoom lenses that Nikon make). But, I end up carting around two large, heavy lenses instead of one reasonably compact lens.

Will it be upgraded? Difficult to say, there have been rumours for a long time. It would be nice to have a decent Nikon equivalent to the ubiquitous Canon 100-400mm.

I still have mine, and it's in good condition. Email me through my profile if you might be interested in buying it.

I was close to buying the 80-400 when I decided I would rather have the long end of the Sigma 150-500mmOS, which has HSM and apparently focuses faster than the AF-D module of the 80-400. Having shot several airshows this year with the Sigma, I am not dissatisfied with it. It is also cheaper than the Nikkor
