is slow compared with current Nikon AF
lenses, especially the AF
If you're shooting airliners, then in nearly all circumstances, the slower AF
isn't an issue. If you're trying to follow a displaying fighter at an air show, then it will struggle, even if you're in continuous focus mode.
It's a decent lens in good light but does struggle in sub-optimal light. I used one for several years and managed OK
with it (I have plenty of shots here taken with it).
For what it provides, I think it's overpriced. I wouldn't go back to it, but that's because the two lenses I've replaced it with are so much better (probably the best two zoom lenses that Nikon make). But, I end up carting around two large, heavy lenses instead of one reasonably compact lens.
Will it be upgraded? Difficult to say, there have been rumours for a long time. It would be nice to have a decent Nikon equivalent to the ubiquitous Canon 100-400mm.
I still have mine, and it's in good condition. Email me through my profile if you might be interested in buying it.
