LAX Winter Spotting Questions

Mon Dec 03, 2012 10:58 pm

Hello all. I am traveling to LAX in a couple weeks, and will be going to the north side. I was looking at In-nOut, but that would be backlit. I have seen a grassy area off a side street that looks suitable. If anyone can offer suggestions it would be apprecaited. Do the police hassle you much there? It looks to be close to the approach lights, so if anyone can tell me if it is a decent shot angle that would help. For reference, it is off Sepulveda East, and by the intersection of Westchester and Sepulveda, over by the used car lot, and adjacent to the far rental car lot. It isn't on Sepulveda itself, because I've heard you get a lot of unwanted attention fot that. Thanks!

I haven't, not even with Air Force One landing. There's a bridge if you head south along Sepulveda from In-N-Out which is decent. And the footpath leading up to that bridge is ok too. Otherwise if you're that worried about being told off, go to Imperial Hill.

Good to hear, do you usually stay a while with no issues? I will be there for 3 hrs. I would try the hill, and have before, but I am spceifically looking for heavies that land on 24R.

I've been around the In'n'Out area for hours and hours, and haven't ever even been approached by a cop.

Even standing in the island in the middle of the intersection has never been a problem.

Cool, great to hear. I think i'll try that island or the grassy knoll. Thanks for your help, and anyone else, feel free to chime in.

You do realise that even though they might be used to landing on one side, switching happens quite often.. Right?

Yeah, I know that! From the data I could fork up, it seems they mostly use 24R. Every time I've been there, 24L is departures, 24R is landing, 25R is both, and 25L is mainly overflow, or domestic landing.

Not quite. 24R and 25L are the main landing runways, and I've seen most airlines land on either/or, especially international airlines. If I had to guess, I'd say that 25L sees more traffic than 24R.

Airlines that fly heavies that I've seen land on both sides include EVA, British, United, American, Delta, Swiss, Korean, China Southern, China Eastern, Lufthansa, Virgin, Singapore, Thai, Air China, China Airlines.....the list goes on and on.

You'll almost certainly see heavies no matter which side you choose, but which airlines/aircraft you'll see is pretty much a crapshoot.

I can guarantee you'll see more Southwest than you would ever want on the north side, though.

Vik, can you recommend any spots for 25L in winter? No kidding about the WN's. I was there last time for 45 min and saw about 14.

Imperial Hill. Winter is the time to be shooting from there.

Yeah, I think my record is about 15 in an hour.

So I have heard, but my parents will be driving and are leery of the area, despite my best lobbying, I absolutely cannot convince them and I have been told no, so I won't push it. Is there anywhere to shoot 25L arrivals?

They're leery of El Segundo?? That's a new one for me.

Tell them that I'm up there quite frequently at night with a couple thousand dollars of camera equipment. And if you're up there during the day, chances are there will be at least a couple other photographers around.

During my few visits to LAX, I've noticed a little bit more international traffic use 24R for arrivals. But then again, I'm not a LAX local so my observations probably aren't be very credible.

I've taken a walk through El Segundo once to get to Imperial Hill - I thought it was actually quite a nice neighborhood especially for one situated right next to an airport.

I showed them the posts and it worked! Thank you so much guys. I think I will split time between Sepulveda and Imperial Hill.

I've just returned from a week in LAX and used this bridge spot a couple of times and had no problems. Police drive past quite often as your right by the airport police station, never once did they stop us.
