Best Spots At JNB

Thu Dec 13, 2012 7:15 pm

Hi everyone,

Soon i'll get an afternoon to catch few birds at O.R. Tambo Airport.
so the basic questions are:

- Is it allowed to photography around the runways?
- What are the most common used departure/arrival runways there (north/south)?
- Regardless of the transportation, how easy is to get to the best spots? and any restriction or place to be?
- Any special event held at the end of this month?

Thanks for all the useful hints

Regards
Léonard

I've only shot at JNB a couple of times but there are some recognised spots for shooting approaches on 21L/03R.

For 03R, these places are good:

I was part of a small group, so felt OK in those locations. On my own, I'd have been a little worried.

No other spotter around these places? Were all of you granted a special authorization?
In Paris (ORY and CDG) only spotters holding a spotting permit delivered by the Prefecture of Police (Metropolitan Police) are allowed to wander around the runways.

You have some nice pictures here, well done!

I was part of an organised trip and there were four of us shooting those two days. As far as I know there are no restrictions to stop anyone taking photos around the airport.

Johannesburg has a bad reputation for crime and I would have been uneasy to be spotting at those locations on my own. I was perfectly happy in a small group.

Hi,

I tried more places at JNB, I think there are a little better places for 03R like Steve said.

Map with spotting positions and other useful places:

- Is it allowed to photography around the runways?

Yes.

- What are the most common used departure/arrival runways there (north/south)?

Arrival 03R and 21L.
Dep 03L and 21R.

- Regardless of the transportation, how easy is to get to the best spots? and any restriction or place to be?

We always used rented car, parking is easy.

Be carefull with some local man and policemen. If you will be alone, try to find a local spotter to join with you.

There are quite a few local spotters in Johannesburg - a good place to make contact is the photography section at avcom . co . za

Do NOT use or carry a handheld radio - a guy was arrested for listening to a handheld radio a couple of years ago in a ridiculous case brought by the local cops.

Same goes for ADSB equipment. Be very careful. Those goons called SAPS have nothing better to do (like fight crime, for instance) than to harass/arrest innocent people enjoying their hobby. There are documented cases of this in South Africa.

Another - and very important- issue, is to be very careful to avoid being out there by yourself. Being a native JNBer I can honestly recommend that you do not hang out at these isolated spots by yourself. Things happen very quickly and life has little meaning in Jozi. Please don't think your car windows offer any defense.
