Matt Molnar Passing. Aviation Fan/photog/advocate

Mon Jan 28, 2013 4:10 am

On Friday, I was stunned by the untimely passing of Matt Molnar. A guy who worked hard in making aviation photography a "legitimate" hobby. He touched the lives of many aviation photographers by helping get the message out. As the shuttle program was winding down, I got to interact with Matt. He will be missed and his passing leaves a void.

Undoubtedly, he will be missed most by his family and close friends. His very close friend,Phil, wrote this touching piece.

Rest in Peace Matt!

Never met Matt, but he was an aviation photography icon. He helped put us on the map. RIP to Matt and I wish his family and girlfriend the best. So sad, gone at 33.

Thank you very much for posting that. This all takes me back to when Paulo Emanuele passed away some years ago.

Matt helped make NYCAviation what it was today, and I jut could never have done it without him. His contributions to aviation enthusiasm are seen through so many that have reached out with support and love in these horrible times.

Thank you again.

Condolences to you, Phil, and to all others affected by this.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Phil my condolences to you and to the NYC Aviation community.

Here with the PHX Spotters community, I didn't personally know him but the other admins did, but I've for sure known of him and what he's done to impact the aviation community. Know that he will be greatly missed.

We as enthusiasts/photographers/professionals are a strong, unique band of brothers and sisters, and this strength will lead us through these difficult times. I personally have been touched by how close we all come together in times of tragedy and this is no different.

RIP Matt. Keep flying in the heavens.

I've only met a few of the NYC enthusiasts and from what I've read, Matt was a great guy. I have however, used the website many times and have found it invaluable while taking pictures at Kennedy. I never knew the man behind the scenes, but I'd like to thank Matt for touching my life in that way. My shooting experiences have been much more enjoyable because of his hard work and love for the hobby.

Sad news, I don't know who was he, but he had Hungarian surname.

Matt's passing leaves us in the NYC area with a big hole in our hearts. I only got to meet him at a few spotting events around JFK and wish I could have gotten to know him better, as his tech wizardry and dedication to aviation were evident to all. To be taken away at such a young age when one has so much to look forward to(and so many who care about them) is perhaps the cruelest twist of fate. As PHX787 has mentioned, I am confident our communal strength will help us through this tragedy.
