SYD Photography Locations

Sun Feb 03, 2013 7:18 pm

Hi, next month I will be in SYD from March 16th to the 20th.....I've heard that there are great locations near SYD, and I also visited spotterswiki to explore a little more. Recently I saw a picture on the DB of an ANZ 77W from " Kyeemagh Beach". How exactly can I get here? And will my equipment (D3000 + 18-55, 55-300) be fit for this area, as well as others?

Thanks a lot!
Now more than ever, moving forward with the new American.

Kyeemagh Beach is a good location in the afternoon but it will be difficult to get there if you intend on walking or public transport,You access it via General Holmes Drive,There is a loop rd that goes under the road (Its located right next to the runway tunnel)
If you check google earth for Sydney Airport and you will see a beach(Carpark) right next to the main runway(16R/34L)

There is a fairly large carpark there and you can either take shots from either the fenceline which requires a ladder or trying shooting from the breakwall infront of the carpark,You can also try of the rocks for different angles.
Your 55-300mm should be good enough to get full frame shots from here.

This is from the carpark

True, we are staying at the Swissotel, which to my understanding is quite far away.....

Cool! Looks like a nice place.

All due respect to Mark, he has a car and to anyone with a car.. any walking or public transport is difficult!! ( I know I am the same when I have a car!!)
If you are staying at the Swissotel in Market Street there is a bus (route 303) that runs very regularly within 2 blocks of your hotel and it stops at Kyeemagh only a couple of hundred metres from the Beach carpark.

Cheers
If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

Sweet! I'll have to do that. Thanks!
Btw, if you know anything about the Swissotel, could you tell me about it?

Actually, the 303 only runs regularly to Mascot Shops. To get from the City to Kyeemagh, you need the full length 303 (displaying Sans Souci) which runs hourly from 6am to 8pm approximately (more frequently in the peak hours). If you jump off at the first stop after the airport tunnel (ask the driver), then you're walking distance to get shots such as what Mark has posted. This is an afternoon spot.

You can also catch the 400 bus to the International Terminal (to spot at the viewing deck) - this is also an afternoon spot. If you are travelling from the City, you can catch the train to Mascot Station or Banksia/Rockdale Stations and get the 400 from there. I am suggesting this to avoid the big Airport Line access surcharge fees on the trains. Or you can pay it and get a train from the City to the International Terminal. The 400 runs every 20 minutes daily.

Unfortunately, without a MASSIVE walk, there is no morning spot that is easy to get to unless you drive if they're using 34L/R. If they're using 16L/R, you can get the 400 bus to the Qantas Jetbase (first stop after it leaves the Domestic or International Terminals, depending on which way you are travelling from) and you can get 16R arrivals (it's the main runway so you'll get all the heavies) from the side of the road near the cycle path. It's just not common to have 16 operations and a sunny morning all in one.
