Reverse Pattern At LAX Tomorrow (02/14)?

Sun Feb 24, 2013 3:02 am

Hello everyone,

With LAX seeing some strong Santa Ana winds tomorrow, is there a good chance we might see LAX go to reverse pattern/eastern ops tomorrow February 24th? Looks like there would be excellent sunny conditions for photography if they did.

From weather.com (http://www.weather.com/weather/tomorrow/LAX:9)

"Sunny. Very windy during the morning. High 66F. Winds N at 35 to 50 mph, becoming W and diminishing to 20 to 30 mph."

What are your thoughts?

-Thomas

It's possible, but I wouldn't bet on it. Even a 50 mph wind out of the north only gives about a 6 mph tailwind when your runways are 7 degrees off directly east-west. If they shift more to northeast at that speed, then quite possibly.

And then obviously with the winds shifting to the west later in the day, everything would be normal.

Luckily I already caught one evening of reverse flow this season, but I certainly wouldn't complain about another one!
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Darn it. Oh well, looks like it's going to be a nice day either way! Thanks for the help!

I was out yesterday in the late afternoon - usual west flow, and not too windy. Did the wind actually ever pick up as much as they had said?

No, actually it was nearly windless. Quite different from the predicted 38mph winds but nonetheless a nice sunny day. Some interesting catches as well, including a Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 takeoff and the China Eastern Skyteam A340-600.
