Most recently, I've had some luck shooting from the access roads on the south side of the airport while they were doing eastward/8L departures. Oddly even though it was only in Dec. 2012 I'm having a hard time pinning down my location then in Google Maps, but I believe it was somewhere along Archibald Avenue. Note that you may need a pretty long focal length for this.

However, if ONT is anything like the rest of the SoCal airports (don't visit it often enough to say,) oftentimes operations will be westward, i.e. runways 26L and 26R. In which case you'd probably be better served by parking in one of the warehouse type facilities near Haven Avenue which runs along the airport's eastern perimeter, and heading out from there.

To be quite honest though, I'm hoping someone with more knowledge can add to this as I don't spot there enough or know anyone who does; it's not a very busy airport.

My first time being there, I mainly am after FX, UPS movements. I am seeing mainly west winds, so I really don't know where to go, I am not finding much. I think anwhere is going to need 300 or more mm to fill the frame. I think I can actually find a locale for the evening sunset shots, but I am still in search for midday. Thanks and anyone with suggestions, please chime in.

Did you try someplace along Haven Avenue? If they're landing from the east end of the airport, that's the closest street to the perimeter and arrivals will pass right over it.

I looked at Haven Ave, but there is nowhere safe to park and I need to be close by my car at all times. That area just doesn't look safe. Are there any good sites along the south side of the airport where I can park and photograph for a while?

From the south end of the airport, I used Archibald Avenue near-ish the control tower like I said and could see my car parked down the block if I really, really squinted. But that was during eastward takeoffs, which I suspect are pretty uncommon, so I don't know how you would do.
