Buying New Camera, But Which One ShouldI Buy?

Mon Apr 08, 2013 1:16 pm

Hi, I want to buy a new Canon camera, but I don't know which one. I have the 550D at the moment and I'm using the Canon 100-400mm lens. Some of the cameras that has crossed my mind is: 6D, 5D mkII and 7D mkII. Which one should I buy, and why?

Well the first question to ask is do you want/need full frame? If mostly what you do is telephoto work (shooting planes at a distance) then FF may not be suitable for you (effectively cutting your ability to fill the frame by x1.6).

On the other hand both offer suberb image quality, Comparing the 6D and the 5D mk II, you will find the 6D has a better AF system. I think the 5D Mk II is a bit sluggish (the 5D mk III is much much better for AF).

As for the 7D Mk 2 - since it won't be available till end of summer at earliest, no one can give you an accurate opinion. But informed guesses suggest this will be effectively a pro-spec crop camera. With probably a pro-spec price and hopefully pro-spec IQ

Well, the first question I would ask is why do you want to upgrade?

That will make it easier to figure out a suitable camera.

I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

I have the same question, I dont suppose I can piggyback on this thread for some advise?

We currently have a 6D. We aer amateurs, and take mainly family/holiday snaps. However my wife is considering a photography course and taking it a bit more seriously.

We have found that the 6D takes great photos, however we have had a couple of issues with reliability. We tend to treat it fairly harshly.

Perhaps we would like something with similar specs to the 6D but a little more robust? Any sugestions?

If a 6D is not tough enough for you and you want to stick with Canon then it has to be the 1d. Latest version is the 1dx but you may still get a good deal on a new Mk IV - or check the second hand market for earlier versions.

Built like tanks - but very heavy compared to a 6d which may be an issue. And of course there's the small matter of price.
Note that earlier versions of the 1D come in a standard 1.3 crop and an 's' version which features a full frame sensor, but lower performance.

Cheers,

As ckw says, the only thing you can really do is move to a 1D, but since you're only just starting out and are using it for snapshots, the 6D is already overkill. I have no idea what you're doing to your 6D or what problems you're having, but I shoot concerts for a living and I have a 6D in my bag. My cameras are treated far from kindly and I've had zero problems. Apart from the polycarbonate top area where the Wi-Fi and GPS receivers are, the body is magnesium alloy. If that's not strong enough for you, I truly have no idea what you're doing to your cameras.

As has already been asked, what is your current hardware failing on that you want to improve? There's very little point in upgrading until you've reached the potential of what you have now. If you're not using your current hardware to its full potential and think that buying a new lens or body will improve your shots by magic, then you'll be sorely disappointed. Maybe you should rethink your commitment to new hardware if one of three bodies you're considering doesn't even exist yet.
