I Want To See A CX B744 In San Francisco

Mon Apr 15, 2013 6:50 pm

Now, I mean, I've seen them before, but every time I seem to come up just short in getting a good photo of a Cathay Pacific passenger Boeing 747-400. I'm down by LAX, so every time I visit family up by the Bay I try and get some SFO spotting in. Still, there's always something- the last two times I've tried I've been just a little bit late for it, other times it's been too hazy or overcast or the airplane turns around and heads back to the gate or I run out of time or some combination of the above. I'd like some advice on the best way of getting this flight for sure- if in fact it stays operated by the B744, and if not, for how much longer before the equipment changes. The way I see it I have a couple of options:
1. Bayfront Park- the location I have tried in the past the most often. I know how to get there, but the quality of my photos is much too unreliable.
2. Coyote Point (the park area to the south of the airport extending into the bay.) I've only been here once before, in part because it seems to be hard to get to unless you have access to your own car, which I usually don't. In addition, the lighting in the mornings/afternoons didn't seem completely trustworthy.
3. An Airtrain station. I've tried this before, I always forget the exact spot but it's at least easy to get to from the terminals proper. This would probably be better for a departure, as some international arrivals turn off the arrival runways some time before coming into view from here. It could also be obstructed now or I could get hassled for photographing from there (though that's never happened before.)
4. I've yet to try it, but apparently you can get departure photos from San Bruno Avenue when the 28s are in use for that. Just looking at a map, it's sound in theory, but it would depend a bit on how high or low the takeoff is.
Any advice?

The northern end of the Airtrain station at Terminal 2 would give you this view of the departure:

You can get a shot of it while it is taxiing to Terminal A after arrival from the southern end of the that Airtrain station. I believe this photo was taken there:

Another option for the departure is the rental car center. You can take the Airtrain there, take the elevator to the rooftop, and from there you can take photos similar to this one:
