Aperture File Export Question

Fri Apr 26, 2013 2:02 am

All,

Have a quick question re photo export from aperture: Only way I can get size below 1MB (for a 1600pix photo) is to decrease the quality slider at which time file size drops from ~1.2MB to 0.2MB. While the image still looks fine, I am curious to know if:
a) anyone using Aperture alone (without Photoshop) is able to export 1600pix photos at quality 12 and if so, how do you do it?
b) if quality at slider 11 is sufficient from Airliners.net quality standards perspective?
I am using Nikon D800 and 70-200 2.8 VR II for most of the photos and I get super sharp photos but once have hard time getting the workflow right. No plans to drop huge amounts on Photoshop as I'm not using it sufficiently to justify the spend. I have Aperture 3.4.4.

Thanks for your help.

Alex,

File size is dependant upon the information in the file so a photo of an aircraft with only sky in the background will probably come in under 1mb for a 1600 pixel file. If you have a terminal or something complex in the background, it won't compress as easily and therefore be much larger and exceed 1mb. The simple solution is to upload at 1024 or 1200 or something smaller than 1600 so you don't compromise on quality to meet the file size limit. Personally, I never upload greater than 1024 pixels for protection. It's surprising how good of a print someone can make at 1600 pixels.
