Miami - AF 747 Runway?

Thu May 16, 2013 2:51 am

Hello,

I live in Florida, my parents are flying from France on Saturday the 26th of May with Air France and will land at Miami airport. I want to take a picture of their plane (my Dad has been a spotter for years and myself for 3), but I have been by the runway (el dorado or official viewing area) enough to know that not all companies will use the same runway, and the only times I've seen an air France land was by the official viewing area.

Do you know either the tower frequency (I still need to get a scanner) or what runway they usually use ?

Thanks!
Jeremy

AF uses runway 9 (27) the majority of the times I've seen them land. However they can also use 12 (30). If you don't have a scanner, a sure way to know is to use flightradar24.com and track the approach.

If they turn west north of the airport, they're usually going for 12. If they go south over the city then they're heading for 9.
When coming in from the east, they usually line up with the target runway pretty early, so it's easy to tell if it's going to be
27 or 30.

I don't have a scanner yet, but check the bottom of this page for the frequencies:

Maybe one of the regular spotters with a scanner can chime in and verify that info.

Generally don't cargo only flights land on 27?........Excluding A380 obviously.

Man, I remember when BA, Virgin and AF would never be seen on the south side.

I'm going to assume you mean during westerly winds. The majority of my spotting has been during easterly winds so I can't say for sure. But I have seen passenger jets coming in on 27 on several occasions. Transaero and Tam comes to mind.

During westerly winds quite a few land on 9: AF, IB, TAM, AA etc.

Some frequencies are listed here: http://www.liveatc.net/search/?icao=mia

Though, if you have an iPhone or Android they have an app, and all other smartphones can access via mobile site.

If you do go the scanner route, some googling suggests ATIS is on 119.15 which will give you landing and departing runways in use at that time.

I downloaded LiveATC on the iphone, that's pretty amazing. Note sure if I'll be able to understand anything but I'll try and I'll check flightaware as they get closer. Thanks and maybe I'll see some of you there (Saturday 5/26).
