Tucson Spotting Flights - MZJ/DMA

Thu Jun 06, 2013 8:44 pm

I am going to a conference in Tucson at the end of July and wanted to add some personal time for some spotting in the area. Obviously, I will spend some time at Pima and hope to take the bus tour of Davis-Monthan's graveyard.

In addition, I would like to take a sightseeing flight out of one of the Tucson airports and hopefully take some air-to-ground shots of the graveyards at the Pinal Airpark and at Davis-Monthan's AFB. However, I have a few questions:

- I heard that the AFB no longer allows "loitering" flights over the graveyard. Is that rule still intact? If so, what about a single crossing on departure out of TUC and one crossing before landing? At least that would yield some pics...

- What time of the day would be best for such a flight in July? Since it will be very hot, I assume the best time might be early in the morning, maybe right after sunrise. Any thoughts/experience with that?

- Can anyone recommend a flight school/charter service that does sightseeing/photo flights? Preferably one that allows you to open the window during the flight.

Any tips and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve, make sure you have enough memory cards with you
Go as early in the morning as you can. It's going to get very hot.
You can cross AMARG if there aren't any A10s or AWACS planes landing or taking off. You can do some orbits around the storage area on the east side that gives you excellent photo ops.
Try for TUS and for PINAL if you are interested in that as well.
Sorry for being brief I've got to run.
Your photos are like your children, you will always find them perfect.
