EOS 1D Mk1 (4.2MP) Vs 350D, Noise

Fri Jun 21, 2013 8:16 am

Hi, I'm a planespotter with very shaky hands and very broke.

I am thinking about "upgrading" from my trusty old 350D to an even older 1D mk1 off ebay. I have to shoot at ISO400 and my reasoning is that 1D mk1 - considering its sensor size AND big pixels - will bring less noise at ISO400 than 350D. All my aviation ISO400 350D images need noise reduction in shadows and other darker parts.

Am I right? Will 1D mk1 be less noisy at ISO400?

Thank you for your thoughts.

I would say taking everything into account you'll be better off stciking with the 350.

Firstly while as a general rule big pixels = less noise, you also have to factor in the fact that
1 - the 1D uses a Panasonic CCD sensor not a CMOS - in Canon's hands at least, CMOS has proven to be inherently cleaner.
2 - the 1D sensor is only 4mp. If you were to reduce your images from the 350 to 4mp, you'll find that these will look sharper and cleaner anyway

And of course there's the fact that the 1D dates from 2001 - Canon has done a lot to improve image quality across the board since then. Color and dynamic range will are probably better in your 350.

A camera dating from 2001 could have quite a history - you may want to consider the cost of a shutter replacement if this camera has been used even moderately (10k shots per year and it will have exceeded expected shutter life).

Finally, I'm not sure this camera will work with modern CF cards - it uses type I or II - with a maximum size of 2gb. I suspect it won't recognise any cards currently on sale.

I wouldn't go from a 350D to a 1D Mk 1. Along with the points Colin stated:

1. The 1D interfaces with the computer via Firewire, not USB.
2. With its 1.3 crop factor, any EF-S lenses you may have won't work on it.
3. Older processer.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Why do you need to shoot at ISO400?

Very shaky hands coupled with non-IS telephoto lens.

I ruined too many shots trying to nail it at lower ISO and I gave up.
